2nd year volunteering at the Boston Marathon - Got assigned to "Finish
Area". Anyone with experiences to share?
Posted: 15 Mar 2022 03:00 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tf1l1g/2nd_year_volunteering_at_the_boston_marathon_got/
I volunteered back in 2019 before Covid screwed everything up and I had a
great time. I was at a hydration station mid course. I really enjoyed it.
Loved seeing the race up close, loved volunteering and I even got the experience of helping a downed running and coordinating the medical teams arrival with stretcher (torn ligament). However, in all, the hydration
areas are chill. I had to check in every hour and record the amount of
water / gatorade that was consumed.
I just got my confirmation for this year and it lists me as "Finish Area".
I have no idea what to expect from the finish area. Anyone with any
experience at the finish area? Any pro tips?

"Half Monster" DIY tranciever
Posted: 15 Mar 2022 07:13 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tepxxf/half_monster_diy_tranciever/
Hello!
I spend already 2 month to build vary interesting but simple radio for two bands, which name "Half Monster" its designed by russian author "Igor2".
Main board
I found in this scheme good technical solutions, and very good dynamic
range. I was tried this radio once, and i like how it was sounds! So in
this case i found turret terminals from avionics on ebay, and I thought:
Lets build it on aluminum plates instead of pcb. I trying to use only high quality components: SilverMica, CK06 and mil-spec components from ebay)
So whats done now: LPF for 18Mhz BPF for 40 and 20 meters IF rejector+LPF
1 Mixer (which have 5 transformers) 1 IF borad (9040khz). Main crystal
filer QER 12pols 2 IF board
Do you want to hear how its sounds?))

I took my test at AES Cleveland way back in 2001. Never went beyond
Technician class. Thinking I want to get back into it but how much has
changed? Are repeaters still mostly analog? Echolink and eQSO still
functional? Kinda wanted to try HF but last I checked, you had to be Extra class to have access to all those bands. Been listening to it all via SDRs
and the bug is biting me. Heard a station in Spain copying Indonesia. From
an SDR in Wales. I know I have to update my address. Its still showing one
from 2014. I was and still licenced as KC8UOK submitted by /u/lvnv1983

My father passed and he had in its original box a Realistic Pro-2006 with
an Optoelectronics 456 add-on. It looks like it was kept in its box for the past 15+ years. It powers on and looks like new. He has a bunch of Bill
Cheek newsletters and Probe software on a old diskette in the box too.
Can I do anything with it or is it worth anything to anyone or should I
just give it to goodwill or recycle it? submitted by /u/wetcoast604

Good Amateur Practice
Posted: 15 Mar 2022 04:53 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ten88w/good_amateur_practice/
So after yesterdays debacle, it got me to thinking. What do you consider to
be "Good Amateur Practice"? Not necessarily what is legal or not legal
(though there can be overlap), but what in your opinion is something that
hams should do even though they are not obligated?
For example, while its not legally required, I consider it to be good
amateur practice on HF to ask if the frequency is in use two or three times before calling CQ on what appears to be an open frequency.
So what do you think is a good amateur practice we should encourage?

Multiple antenna -> splitter -> one radio/RTL-SDR dongle?

First time poster here. Apologies if something to this regard has been
posted previously. My searches didn’t yield many relevant results. . I have multiple different types of antenna, and am wondering if using a splitter
to connect 2 or more of them to one RTL-SDR dongle or handheld radio would
just work, or would I encounter issues? Would this help any with improving signal quality, depending which configuration is applied? Thank you kindly
in advance! - some noob submitted by /u/SmokingServer

How precise do PL tones need to be?
Posted: 15 Mar 2022 02:10 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/teksti/how_precise_do_pl_tones_need_to_be/
Hi all, over spring break I’m building a breadboard PL tone generator for
fun using a microcontroller with a 5-bit DAC.
My question is—How precise does the tone need to be? Per my multimeter, my proof-of-concept build holds at 192.8 hz, but occasionally dips down to
192.7 hz when the MCU is cold, and occasionally bumps up to 192.9 hz when it’s all warmed up.
Is this too imprecise? Would I need a more precise clock than the one in my MCU, or should that cut it?
Thanks a lot! submitted by /u/Professor_Stank

Typical SNR for 2 meter reception with simple dipole antenna?
Posted: 15 Mar 2022 02:15 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tf0kkq/typical_snr_for_2_meter_reception_with_simple/
What range of signal-to-noise ratio might be considered normal for 2 meter reception of a repeater thats 15-20 miles away, using the basic dipole
antenna thats included with a RTL-SDR dongle? Im a noob listening to a
couple of local 2m ham nets here in the San Francisco metro area (N6NFI
Palo Alto and WB6NDJ Oakland), and the SDR# software shows SNR of about
22-24 dB for these repeaters. I can hear everybody, but the speech quality
isnt always great and its sometimes tough to hear call signs clearly. Im
not sure if I should mess around with the antenna some more, or if this
audio quality and low 20s SNR is normal. I dont have any other radios to compare with.
Each section of the dipole is extended to about 19.25 inches (38.5 inches total) to make a half-wave dipole tuned for 146 MHz, and its oriented vertically, with the coax center conductor wired to the upper dipole
section and the ground wired to the lower section. The whole thing is about
10 ft off the ground. It would be helpful to know if low 20s SNR sounds
normal for this setup, or if a better antenna setup would likely perform significantly better. Thanks. submitted by /u/blinkybit

Need help with TS440 encoder repair
Posted: 15 Mar 2022 04:25 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/temru2/need_help_with_ts440_encoder_repair/
Dear all,
Yesterday, the encoder on my TS440 seized and I havent dared move it since. Online I see the insides of this encoder exists of two very delicate
plates. I am uncertain how to proceed so any advice is greatly appreciated. Firstly, I am contemplating trying to resolve it with some lubricant but I
am almost certain this wont help. It felt as if the whole thing was off
axis with increasing and decreasing friction when it seized. I pretty sure
this must mean one of the plates is pressing against the inside body of the encoder.
Secondly, any advice or guide on how to get the front apart? The encoder is well hidden beneath three stacks of boards with quite some wire spaghetti holding it all together.
This is really unfortunate I feel this is going to be a very substantial
effort to fix
