Icom Japan announces new entry-level HTs

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 07:51 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/th34j9/icom_japan_announces_new_entrylevel_hts/

Icom Japan has announced the arrival of a new pair of entry-level HTs, the IC-S10 and IC-T10. It seems that this model is the successor to the Icom
T70 series dual-bander that was discontinued a while back. Banner features include IP67 dust / waterproofing, a 1500mW speaker, and broadcast FM
    receive.
Knowing US market preferences, I imagine that well eventually see only the full-keypad T10 model arrive stateside. This could be a decent competitor
to the FT-60 if they end up opening the RX wider than they currently have
it specified in the Japan market, where it is amateur band only. https://www-hamlife-jp.translate.goog/2022/03/18/icom-ic-s10_ic-t10-release/?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wapp

    Brand New IC-2730A smells awful

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 10:36 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/th882f/brand_new_ic2730a_smells_awful/

I’m a new ham, after a lot of research just bought my first radio: a Icom IC-2730A from HRO, brand new in the box.
I have not installed it yet because it smells BAD. REALLY BAD. To me it
smells like a dead animal. The radio, control head, and mic all smell this
way. It was bad enough that I thought it was the box itself as soon as it
was delivered until I got it open and started smelling the parts. I put it outside in a storage room hoping it will air out and I can install it this weekend. The smell is on my hands just from handling the radio.
I don’t know what it is, maybe formaldehyde? Anyone else here experienced this? If the smell doesn’t go away it will have to go back to HRO and I’m sure they’re going to think I’m crazy when I call about this. No way I can install it in my car as it is. submitted by /u/SlowCalamity

    Ailunce HD1 Delay

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 01:45 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/thepik/ailunce_hd1_delay/

As the title suggests, I have a delay issue with my newly bought HD1. Basically, in any mode and any setting the radio has some kind if delay
before it starts transmitting after the PTT button is pressed. Sometimes
its 0.5 seconds and sometimes can be as high as 4 seconds. Tried it in FM
and DMR modes. But when it actually starts transmitting the audio is in
perfect sync or without delays. So it doesnt seem to be a processing
overhead but a delay when starting transmission. Does anyone else have this issue and is there a solution? submitted by /u/Repania

Pool pole antenna - why not for long term use?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 11:04 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tha5yy/pool_pole_antenna_why_not_for_long_term_use/

I see a lot of folks recommending pool pole antennas for a temporary mast.
My question is why wouldnt it work for long term as well? I have been using
a ~25ft carp pole antenna for the past 3 years, and its starting to look
pretty weathered. I was thinking of using a pool pole as a mast with an inverted V attached to it.
We dont get a ton of lightning where Im at, but we do get 120 km/h winds
every now and than when a storm hits. submitted by /u/SpecialConditions

How to identify while travelling to US

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 07:11 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/th293y/how_to_identify_while_travelling_to_us/

I’m travelling to the states next week and wanted to take my HF and VHF radios to play with. How does a Canadian identify in the states (I know there’s a / symbol and state prefix or suffix but what exactly would it be and how does one say ‘/‘ is it stroke or slash? I’ll be in Pennsylvania…
It sounds like a silly question but I haven’t travelled with my radio
before and wanted to make sure I did it correctly 🙂
As an aside how would I log contacts on HF while I’m there? I use N3FJP. Thanks! submitted by /u/gimmesnows

What feedline would you use in a vehicle?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 06:41 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/th1lqi/what_feedline_would_you_use_in_a_vehicle/

Hey all, Im considering wiring my SUV with an external VHF (maybe
infrequently UHF) antenna. My DIY external antenna for my walkie talkie
works great with its LMR 400, but that sort of coax seems too stiff to be practical in this instance. What have you used for your vehicle feedlines
    for VHF/UHF?

Edit: Looks like the majority state RG-58, though there are some other cool responses. Next step is trying to find a good place to get the wire through
the body. Im going to try to avoid the firewall, since there are a lot of electrical things in an engine compartment. submitted by /u/TedwardCz

Exited to be taking part in this, we are working as a club team, all ZS2 stations. Just looking to expand my horizons in the hobby. Couple of old
hands giving advice on setting up the rigs and procedure, software for logging(N1MM logger ) as to my normal HRD that I use etc.
It going to be an early start here, in ZS-land about 2 am local time.
Looking forward to making a few contacts with hopefully some Redditors. submitted by /u/reffak

    Which antenna for 1420.4MHz

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 12:01 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tgvgiu/which_antenna_for_14204mhz/

    Hello,
I need to build some type of antenna to detect a wavelength of ~21cm (8,268 Inches)(Hydrogen Line, want to build a radio telescope). I calculated that
my antenna should be around 10.5cm (4.13 Inches). But which mirror is
    feasible for this?
I see a lot of people building horn antennas for this but I am wondering if
a satellite dish or wife grid antenna can be used for this. In their focal point I would place a wire of 10.5cm (4.13Inches) to detect the signal. But does this work or am I completely missing something?
Thank you everyone. submitted by /u/defaltusr
