    propagation prediction/tracking software suggestions

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 04:57 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tiyg6s/propagation_predictiontracking_software/

I am new to actively tracking propagation patterns but would like to try it
out to better predict when to hit certain countries while doing DX. What
are your suggestions for propagation tracking? Id prefer freeware but would
be willing to pay if it were really good and easy to use. I have Windows if that matter. Thank you! submitted by /u/BlueCouch89

Running WSPR on my FT DX 3000. I have the power set at 15watts. But my
antenna tuner is showing more like 100 watts. Am I over driving things? And
is 15 watts too much power to be using? submitted by /u/jasonpheral

Butterfly Capacitor Question for Mag Loop

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 12:16 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tisi2m/butterfly_capacitor_question_for_mag_loop/

    Hi everyone,
Please excuse my ignorance, but I wanted to ask two quick questions on butterfly caps, as Im wanting to make my own magnetic loop antenna for transmitting upto 100w on HF.
I know high voltage is going to be involved, so:
    1) Is there an issue with introducing plastic dielectric material between
the plates (such as PETG or ASA)? I was wondering about 3d printing covers/shims to enclose the centre plates of the capacitor to stop arcing.
Im not sure if this leads to poor performance as it doesnt seem to be
    widely discussed.
    2) I know vacuum variable capacitors are sought after and good for this application, but difficult/expensive to obtain. What about enclosing a
normal butterfly capacitor in an airtight box and sucking the air out,
vacuum sealing it? Again thinking 3d printed housing with acetone smoothing used to "melt" the plastic and totally seal it with the capacitor inside.
To be clear... option one seems much easier for sure if do-able. Also would seem to protect from shorting out caused by an unwanted guest (be it insect
    or moisture).
Id be curious to know your thoughts! Thanks very much :) submitted by /u/chrisoverson

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 12:57 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/titdzw/26_mhz_is_open_28_mhz_may_follow/

Evidence, I am using a tv antenna with horizontal polarization that runs
from 54 to 900 MHz roughly with a preamp.
It is not optimized for 10 meters let alone 26 mhz. It shouldnt be
    receiving much of such signals.
The people speaking seem to be freebanders in Spanish speaking countries. I
am currently within 100 miles of the straighter part of the Ohio River. submitted by /u/dt7cv

    Wouxun KG-UV6X startup beeps (morse?)

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 04:17 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tixndp/wouxun_kguv6x_startup_beeps_morse/

Hi everyone, I just bought a Wouxun radio and when turning it on, Im
greeted by several beeps of the same tone. These dots represent the tones
( .. ) I didnt pay much attention to them thinking theyre a generic startup noise to adjust the volume of the speaker.
Yesterday I noticed that the beeps had changed to ( .. .. ) Ive looked in
the manual to see if this is an error code or status on startup but cannot
    see anything detailed too that..
So I was wondering if any other Wouxun owners also experience these (.. ..) beeps on startup and if theyve always sounded like that or Im just going
crazy. thanks in advance. submitted by /u/TheOrange1

    Yaesu FT1XD vs. FT5DR

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 04:14 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tixlsj/yaesu_ft1xd_vs_ft5dr/

Im trying to decide between buying the older Yaesu FT1XD and the new FT5DR. What are the differences I should be aware of? I know the FT5DR has a
larger color touch screen display and has an IPX7 rating versus an IPX5
rating on the FT1XD. Are there any compelling reasons to go with the FT1XD
even though it has older technology? I believe both HTs have APRS, C4FM, automatic mode select, GPS, are dual frequency capable, and are digital
radios. Neither have SSB. I believe both have decent audio output and
battery life. Cost is not an issue. submitted by /u/houser432

Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks submitted by /u/Late_Glove6364

Dual Band Mobile / new vs used

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 01:58 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tiuqbn/dual_band_mobile_new_vs_used/

I am looking for a dual band rig for my third vehicle. I have a few Yaesu
8800r in my home and other vehicles already. Im torn between looking for a
used 8800r for familiarity or going with something new that would mean
learning all new menus and layouts.
Are there any benefits to newer rigs that I should factor in considering I
only need to access analog 2m/70cm repeaters or simplex frequencies when mobile?
Curious if anyone has made a similar decision and what direction you
    went. submitted by /u/doa70

    looking for direction

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 08:51 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tinzp5/looking_for_direction/

    Hey all,
Long time lurker 1st time poster. Got my tech ticket a few months ago and
have been playing with a low end 2m/70cm HT for giggles. Have a few SDRs I really enjoy playing with as well. Ive played with data modes like APRS,
SSTV, WeFax, and really enjoy the data aspect of it (work in IT and only
use linux besides work). The problems Im starting to run into is my low end
HT just isnt something I want to use all the time (small display, no data
usb, other features) and I knew it coming in since I wanted to start basic.
The overall issue is I have disability with my arms so I cant lift heavy
gear and too small can be difficult when pain is bad (think of working with claws). Im usually on during the day EST and want explore more of the data
side but also expand from some of the local repeaters. Sounds more and more like DMR from reading might the answer but with a PC background it feels
more like a cell with communication app then a radio but I dont experience
with one so my view could certainly be wrong. Is there any tri or quad with 10m? Any input welcome and appreciated. submitted by /u/ChCat
