Getting back into hobby - trust worthy radio repair shop ?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2022 10:34 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tk8cz5/getting_back_into_hobby_trust_worthy_radio_repair/

Hello all - after a long break , I pulled out some of my old equipment I
had . Not much but I’ve got an Alinco DJ-580 & an Azden 2m radio . I’ve since let my license go , but I’m looking to retake the test . Not sure
what I did to these radios when I way younger - As I remember the Alinco
worked when I last used it & if my memory serves me the azden just stopped powering up . Are there any shops that I could send these radios to and
have them looked at ? Probably going to cost me more to repair then to just
buy new ones but I really liked the Alinco & would like to see it come back
    to life submitted by /u/Conscious-Lettuce-83

Inexpensive CW single band transceivers? Trouble finding

    Posted: 22 Mar 2022 09:57 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tk7ixl/inexpensive_cw_single_band_transceivers_trouble/

Hello, I have been looking to get into hf and heard that single band cw is
not a bad way to start on the cheap, issue is I can’t find any really, and the ones that people talk about are sold out. Any help would be
appreciated, I have low electrical knowledge so if anyone has kits they recommend, it would need to be one which has good instructions etc.

What is a Good RX Only/ Low Power Radio for My Situation? [Help]

    Posted: 22 Mar 2022 05:28 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tk1vn1/what_is_a_good_rx_only_low_power_radio_for_my/

Hi everyone! For a project Im trying to find a standalone radio, ideally a
set it up and forget it kind of radio, (or scanner) that is ideally RX
only, because the TX wont really be used. (Traditional SDR wont work
because using an entire computer feels overkill for the task.)
I just wanted to know if there is something analog/ DTMF compatible that
can just output received audio on a frequency within the 2m/ or 70cm bands.
The radio will be on almost all the time and be outside in a weatherproof
box, so large temperature swings might be a problem. The box the radio is
going in has 120VAC and 24VDC available. I have a few ideas, but I think it
is just better to ask first.

    Amateur Radio for the Antisocial?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2022 10:27 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tjvqh7/amateur_radio_for_the_antisocial/

The titles a bit of an exaggeration (and inspired by a book title I found
while searching) but Im interested in getting into amateur radio for the electronics and technical side of things. Sending and receiving signals
from hundreds of miles away, building things, messing with satellites and meteor bounces, QRP, etc. That all sounds really fun. The more social
aspect Im not that into and Id rather be able to do my thing without coordinating around when other people are on the air.
Im studying for the Technician and General exams but Im trying to sort out
what aspect of amateur radio I want to start pursuing once Im licensed. It seems like some of the text and data modes would be a good fit for what I
want to get out of it but thought I would ask for suggestions to narrow my research a little bit.

Edit: Thanks all for the input! Glad Im not the only one. :p submitted

    Best mode for emergencies?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2022 10:17 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tk7z5w/best_mode_for_emergencies/

Ive been pondering emergency communications lately and been tossing around
pros and cons in my head. Assuming a statewide or regional disaster, what
are thoughts on the best modes?
    Here are my thoughts.
Vhf voice. Most common, but assuming that repeaters are down, you are essentially limited ti simplex so rang would be short.
Aprs allows for text chat but is limited to the digipeater network that may
    ir may not be working
Cw. Sure, cw might go around the world on 1 watt, but its not very fast and realistically how many people are fluent in Cw?
Winlink (vhf or hf) . Has redundant servers across the world but assumes
that the person on the other end has access to email
Js8call. I keep coming back to js8call since it allows keyboard to keyboard chat. You get the benefits of HF range with away from computer message
    saving.
What am I missing, what other modes or methods should be considered?

Hey everyone, I recently installed my new mobile radio in my truck and made
my first contact on this radio on a local repeater while driving home. Everything was great and my signal on their end was loud and clear but the
road noise slaughtered my audio. So basically I was looking on Amazon and
they had a bunch of $12-$20 external speakers. Will these be louder or just provide the ability to have the speaker closer to me? submitted by /u/cleetermcbeeter

    Tradeoff: C4FM or cross-band repeat

    Posted: 22 Mar 2022 06:42 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tk3bba/tradeoff_c4fm_or_crossband_repeat/

Im currently in the market for a mobile dual-band radio. I was leaning
    towards the ICOM IC-2730A (https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/ico-ic-2730a
    - $290 after rebate) because it seems to offer the most functionality
compared to the Yaesu FTM-6000- Simultaneous receive (cross-band repeat functionality) plus the ability to attach the mic to the head unit or the radio. Cross-band repeat seems interesting as it would allow me to leave
the mobile radio in my office and repeat the signal from my HT. However,
the Yaesu FTM-200DR just came out and offers C4FM for $399 (https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/ysu-ftm-200dr). C4FM is pretty popular
in my area and there are some nets that can only be accessed using a C4FM-capable radio. Also, C4FM seems like the more future-proof choice. The downside is that the FTM-200DR (like many of Yaesus other recent offerings) does not offer cross-band repeat functionality. Does it make sense to prioritize C4FM over simultaneous receive? submitted by /u/LousyPilotApparently

    "Best Practices"

    Posted: 22 Mar 2022 07:22 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tk44ds/best_practices/

In the worlds of business, industry, and academics, there are often
discussions of "best practices." I was thinking the other day about my 20m dipole. It works well. There are no problems with it. Yet, I wondered, if I built another 20m dipole, what would make it the very best it can be? What
are the "best practices" in building a 20m dipole?
So I ask, 1) what is the best wire for the antenna? 2) What is the best configuration at the feed point? 3) What is the best coax? 4) What is the
best connector on the shack end of the coax?
Now, I know there are many opinions and some will just say, " whatever
works." But, in all seriousness, I need a project. I am going to build
another 20m dipole. What are the "best practices" or in other words, what
is the best material I should use?
The dipole is for my shacks base station. It will be supported by cords
into trees in my back yard. The current dipole is up about 28 feet or so. I
can place the proposed dipole much higher. submitted by /u/dbgreen

Just gotten back into it after about a decade. Went and got me a cheap Radiodity HT and trying to figure it out. I cant seem to hit any repeaters working despite setting the correct offset and CTCSS. Yet I managed to successfully program it to use at work with UHF frequency, offset and
correct DCS tone. If there was somebody local enough to hear me on the
input or possibly take a spectrum analyzer to it that would help a great
