I live in (and am president of) a HOA. Can you hide an antenna? Other ideas?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2022 03:08 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tq5zdg/i_live_in_and_am_president_of_a_hoa_can_you_hide/

Im getting into Ham for the first time when I test this summer. (Failed the test years ago and never got around to taking it again) I live in a HOA and
I have two neighbors who will pitch a hissy fit if they can see an antenna.
I deal with them on the board so I know how they can be. I live extremely
close now to a repeater if I remember correctly from before. I wondered if
Id get any real enjoyment if I cant mount an antenna for a base station. I
also wondered if it was even worth fooling with at all if I cant mount something.
Id like some suggestions and ideas before I go out and start studying
again for my test. Thank you in advance.
Edited to add: thanks everyone for the advice. So our HOA is full of people
who refuse to participate. We can not change the huge quarum requirements
until we can get enough votes to do so. We would love to make loads of
changes, state law makes some requirements that make it slightly more complicated than just a signature. Even when we made it as easy as dropping
by the park, few showed up. No one cares, until something happens then I
get harassed along with the rest of the board, about it. Im aware of the TV antenna thing. It would wind up in court and no one in this little working class neighborhood can afford it. Wed move but housing prices have
skyrocketed, and we cant afford a bigger payment. So were kinda stuck. submitted by /u/Bastilleinstructor

30Mhz and lower in a Tesla

    Posted: 28 Mar 2022 01:44 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tqiw81/30mhz_and_lower_in_a_tesla/

Some day I would like to own a Tesla. Ive seen some youtube videos on
various radio transceivers mounted in various EVs and they all seem to have their own weird interference problems. It probably has something to do with hundreds of KW worth of power inverters operating in the tens to hundreds
of khz switching range on the same ground reference as a radio receiver. I
dont think new Teslas even have AM radios in them!
Does anyone here have any experience running 30Mhz and lower in a Tesla? Id eventually like to own a Tesla someday and would like to put an HF rig in
it. Is there any hope for it working while the car (or Cybertruck) is on
and driving? Or am I going to be stuck operating off of a separate 12V
battery just for the HF radio, and only while parked, with the Tesla
    powered down?
Looking for any experience with this, good or bad. submitted by /u/put_tape_on_it

How to place multiple antennas within a relatively small area.

    Posted: 28 Mar 2022 11:09 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tqfgfr/how_to_place_multiple_antennas_within_a/

Hi. I am working on a project where I need to place some external antennas
in an plane of around 220mm to 400mm in size.
The wireless technologies in use are WiFi 2.4/5Ghz, Bluetooth, 4G LTE, 5G
NR, LoRaWAN 865 to 868MHz. We plan to use 2 antennas for WiFi-Bluetooth, 3
or 4 for Cellular (Main, Diversity, GNSS, 2x MIMO Antennas Frequency Range
of cellular from 700MHz to 5GHz) and 1 antenna for LoRaWAN.
I am no RF Engineer, but I want to decide the placement of these antennas. Requirements are that the interference and coupling between antennas is
minimal and these antennas perform optimally within the constraints.
Apart from the general guidelines for antennas placement such as placing
the antennas at least 1/4th wavelength apart, orienting the antennas in a
way that that the radiation patterns of antennas are different from each
other what are the other ways to ensure optimal performance?
I would really appreciate if someone can point me to resources that will
help me come up with a solution for this. Also, learnt that some antennas placement simulation software can help decide antenna placement.
What different approaches can I try to solve this?
    Thanks! submitted by /u/surfinride

Remote control to avoid horrific coax run and other issues

    Posted: 28 Mar 2022 01:07 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tqi2r2/remote_control_to_avoid_horrific_coax_run_and/

Where would I look for remote control technology where I could interact
with a virtual transceiver on a computer, but the real RF transceiver is located in a different corner of the house, or maybe even in a dog house? I
am trying to avoid 1) terrible coax run from my office, 2) having receiver
next to computers, 3) desktop clutter, 4) punching holes in walls / windows where the XYL would throw an absolute fit. I think it would be too much for Bluetooth, so maybe WiFi P2P (WiFi Direct). Any thoughts? submitted by /u/SquattyLaHeron

I live in the UK and I just have passed my foundation licence.
I am looking into buying a small handheld radio 10 watts (under foundation licence in the UK you can only 10 watt radios)
Many people are recommending to get Baofeng UV-5R which for many people is convenient and gives a range of 4-5 miles and amazing value for money
however they are some people who are completely against due to being
complete piece of poo and say you should buy Japanese one. I respect every
body opinions about them and I would like to really hear it from users who actually used them.
Is there any recommendation regarding 10 watts radios which Im not gonna

Ive been tinkering with small magnetic loop antennas using a Faraday

Id like to measure the actual voltage across the tuning capacitor when operating, but Im not sure how. It could be hundreds of volts at HF frequencies.

    20 meter zep

    Posted: 28 Mar 2022 03:42 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tqldx0/20_meter_zep/

My Elmer has warned me about the collective knowledge of the internet (no offense) when it comes to things amateur radio related. Unfortunately I am currently unaware of his mortal state so rather than perhaps getting no
answer I will try asking here. I am sure this sort of thing has been
discussed before but if I may revisit the topic in some particulars.
So after some calculating and measuring I have settled on being able to
squeeze in a 20 meter (edit: double extended 5/8) zep. One issue I am
checking on is the center connection and the feed line. My plan is to use 2 continuous pieces of 14 gauge hard drawn wire for each side, meaning the
feed line and onenleg will be a single piece. The center I was going to
snake through 3 holes of a center support and maybe a small wire clamp to
hold it static but will also allow me to adjust the length if need be for tuning. I was thinking about running a ladder line with a 6 inch spacer
down to the feed point. I see no reason why this may be a problem but if it
is I would like to know why.
Next question is do I keep the same 6 inches where I turn the wire to
extend out from the feed to the antenna portion or does it need to be
    closer?
The bit I am still a little muddy on is the feed into the transceiver. I
was told that I would be able to just splice it to coax and the tuner
should be able to work it out on its own. But I have also read that a balun would be needed. This is probably the bit I could use a solid answer on.
Some tuners I see have an input for balanced lines that goes through a
balun in the unit. I can build my own balun if need be, that seems simple enough. submitted by /u/LoneStrangerer

    Posted: 28 Mar 2022 01:23 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tqifva/will_this_fm_radio_receiver_circuit_work/

I designed a FM radio receiver circuit, and I cannot test it on a
breadboard due to the internal capacitances and the high frequency of the signals Im trying to receive. Im about to solder all of the components onto

circuit before I do it. Heres the link to the circuit: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sk2uIf56Ake_oD8jrhKbnRg40w9vK0zb/view?usp=sharing

    Cheap DMR HT?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2022 01:15 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tqi9q2/cheap_dmr_ht/

Im looking for an inexpensive DMR HT for repeater use to recommend to local hams who are not ready to pay ~$300 for the high-end market leaders like
    the D878.
The GM-77 would be perfect for this, but appears to be no longer available.
As far as I can tell, none of the Radioddity models is available today
except the GM-73, which is only recommended for hotspot use.
UHF-only is acceptable, as there are no VHF DMR repeaters in this area.
What is available in the low cost, $100 or so range that you would
    recommend? submitted by /u/FireWatchWife

I used Android Morse apps to re-learn Morse and that was ridiculously easy actually. I am also using webSDR online receivers to listen to traffic. So
I think this side I already figured out.
But what is the best way to re-learn tech? I mean I have forgotten even the basic calculations. And radio propagation stuff was always pure voodoo to
