HRO question
Posted: 07 Apr 2022 04:34 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/typxqn/hro_question/
This week I made my first order from Ham Radio Outlet and a day after I
placed the online order I received a phone call from a HRO employee asking
me to verify my address for "security/fraud purposes because he hadnt been
able to find anything online linking my name with my address".
I obliged and gave my callsign and the HRO employee verified my address and matching payment info via FCC ULS but all they had to do was run my card
and the payment and shipping address wouldve shown to be the same.
It sounds like I placed an order and HRO employees started googling my name
and address which feels like an invasion of privacy. (Yes, I know the FCC
ULS is public and our callsigns/addresses are posted in in the clear.) Just wondering if this is normal HRO sop?
Ive never had an online retailer do this, regardless of purchase amounts.
Im pretty sure HRO couldve just ran my card and put my order in the mail.
UPDATE: Thanks for the pile-up guys. Im not a big reddit user so I probably wont get to the rest of the responses. I really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and of course Im really looking forward to getting on the
air with my new gear.
And FWIW, Im not disparaging HRO. My order processed and I have a tracking number and I dont have any doubts that what I purchased will arrive safe
and sound.

Looking to advance further in the hobby by going into shortwave listening coming from baofeng so I can experiment with antennas etc, and gain overall experience. The ats 25 looked pretty good with its base station build,
roughly 100 dollar cost and the lcd screen seems nice as well despite its
not top of the line receive performance, what’s your thoughts. Thank you

my wifes workplace, they have someone screwing with their key fobs on the parking lot. Keys often dont work at all, or cars lock or unlock without
the owner initiating. I know very little about the technology other than
seeing a few news reports how people use amplifiers to unlock cars in
peoples driveways. Anyone here able to help me understand and sort out
whats happening? I appreciate even a kick over to somewhere better if this
is the wrong place. Thanks. submitted by /u/gribbler

Anyone get Fldigi working on Manjaro Linux?
Posted: 07 Apr 2022 08:03 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tyf0vf/anyone_get_fldigi_working_on_manjaro_linux/
Im trying to get this and Flrig working on Manjaro Linux which is based on Archlinux but having trouble.
Im not sure if the device is /dev/USB0 or /dev/ttyS0 like the arch wiki
says and I added myself to the uucp group but it keep coming up saying it
cant communicate with the radio and to run through the config.
I have the SignaLink USB plugged in and the pre built jumper pack installed
for my radio. I went through the SignaLink instructions and tried to muddle through them considering they are written for Windows.
Any ideas?

I just looked at hf amplifier prices for the first time. Holy Cow! And I thought radios were expensive...
Posted: 06 Apr 2022 08:35 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/txox2y/i_just_looked_at_hf_amplifier_prices_for_the/
Looks like minimum for a new, solid state hf amp and power supply is around
$2k to $3k, in the 500 to 800 watt range.
Im betting most folks here will say its unnecessary. But all the stations I hear most clearly say theyre running some kind of amp. So, there must be
some advantages, right? submitted by /u/VisualEyez33

Antenna lightening arrestors

Reading another thread concerning equipment grounding I began thinking
again about the antenna being planned to put on the roof.
Some antennas I read come with a lightening arrestor built-in. I understand from studying for the Technician licence Ive earned what is recommended
about ground rods and straps, but are lightening arrestors actually useful? Thank you for reading this message. submitted by /u/2meters_70cm

HF antennas for new ham with restricted space
Posted: 06 Apr 2022 08:41 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ty43lr/hf_antennas_for_new_ham_with_restricted_space/
Im pretty new to ham radio and am testing for my general license on
Saturday. I want to get into HF, but after talking to some people it seems
like my location is not at all suited for HF.
Im in high school and live with my parents in a city. I dont have room for
EFHW antennas that are more than 20 feet long (one for the 40m band would
be like 70 feet IIRC). Right away that cuts down my options significantly.
Next there are vertical antennas which are like 20 feet tall. That would be fine, but because I live in an old house, the ground is on the water line
and only accessible from indoors, so outdoor smaller antennas are also virtually unfeasible. The last option is indoor antennas, but those dont
seem to be any good for HF for what I can tell.
Any suggestions of what I could do to get a HF antenna working under these circumstances would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance
(Im very new to ham radio so Im sorry if I missed any important details in
my question)

Looking into transmitting data
Posted: 07 Apr 2022 03:49 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tyacxq/looking_into_transmitting_data/
Im a complete amature so please be nice?
So basically the title says it all, Im looking into transmitting very small amounts of data over a long distance (in a crowded city). The data is just
gps coordinates. what are my best options for this? Also, is it not
possible to use existing infrastructure (radio towers, broadcast towers,
etc..) to transmit data (over a frequency thats not being used ig)?
UPDATE:
Thank you guys for your input, I really appreciate it. It seems like Im in
a bit of a pickle, according to
http://aprs.fi/ there arent any digipeaters
in my country (Lebanon), theres just a single repeater tower. Also it seems like ill be limited to the 6-meter band. Im guessing APRS isnt an option anymore, or should I go about building my own "tower" or "repeater" (on the roof of the building)? Apologies if Im not using proper terminologies.
Also, getting an amateur license isnt a problem, actually I think it would
be fun to try and get one, I suppose I can also add it to my portfolio. submitted by /u/XLZSLAYER
