I only needed my technician but gave general a shot because why not. Passed Tech and came so close for general, just 2 questions short of passing. I
figure that gap in knowledge will be filled just from participating as a technician class.
Anyway hope to run into you folks on the air. submitted by /u/kodack10

Going to put up a dipole or possibly a multi band and because of the HOA, I
can only put it in a specific spot that would require 150 to 200 foot coax
run. Will this even work ? submitted by /u/FirstRonin

Ground vs counterpoise
Posted: 16 Apr 2022 04:01 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u59iwg/ground_vs_counterpoise/
I’m confused about the ground lug on a few of my radios and devices. The
Icom ic-705 has one as does my Xiegu G90 on the back. The small ATU-10
antenna tuner (battery powered) I have for the Icom also has a ground screw
on the back.
What do I attach to these screws? I operate battery powered always and
never connect to a power supply if that matters.
My Comet HFJ-350 antenna which I use with the 705 has a small banana plug that’s supposedly for connecting a counterpoise which I’ve done and I think it works.
The Windcamp RC-1 which is the bracket connecting the antenna to the radio
has a screw called ground as well. I’ve connected the counterpoise wire to this too. I suspect there is no difference as this is really the same as
the banana plug on the antenna as well as the outer part of the coax. If
I’m not mistaken, this screw is bonded to the entire RC-1 bracket which is actually attached to the IC-705’s radio ‘ground’ screw as well. I think it’s all one and the same?
So, is ‘ground’ on the IC-705 really just a place to attach a counterpoise? What about ground on the back of the G90 and the back of the ATU-10?
I know there are requirements to electrically ground radio equipment and
that this is done into a grounding rod outside which is also bonded to the home’s ground but I think the above ‘grounds’ must be different given I operate battery power only? Can some or all of them be relabeled ‘counterpoise’? I’m confused!

heard a station working DX- I gave my call every time he called qrz, but no avail. Then he started saying “listening on five” or so I thought.
Turns out it was listening UP five.
Suffice to say I did not make it in the logbook. submitted by

have already a portable 296Wh battery that has outlets built in and was
curious if i used a power supply if i can run the full 100w from it and if
so how long or perhaps if not what it might be capable of running in the
field. I do have a 100w folding solar pannel to go along with it to help recharge or keep it charged. Thanks in advance for the information!

Need help with WebSDR and decoding!

So I went to websdr and I found one in russia on the 2m band that covers
the frequency of the Meteor M2 satellite. I pressed a button on the page
which tuned it in as it passed over and I got some beeping and a metronome sound that I recorded. I put it into audacity and set the project rate to 130000kHz and then exported it as WAV then imported it into LrptRx and the constellation diagram shows a diagonal pattern from top left to bottom
right (with I/Q swap). Is that good? I thought it was meant to be 4 dots in each quadrant? submitted by /u/AdoptedEgg

When to give an honest RST and when to 59(9)?
Posted: 15 Apr 2022 11:47 AM PDT

Im curious to get peoples opinions on this. When Im having a QSO, I want
honest feedback on my RST, but Ive heard others say "59(9) and move on".
Which do you do, and does it vary by mode? Like, do people expect a 599 on
CW more than phone?
I get that dx & dxpedition stations pretty much always give 59(9) to
everyone, but what about in "normal" QSOs? submitted by /u/Ironring1

Is There A More Powerful Way to Communicate With FRS?
Posted: 15 Apr 2022 05:37 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u4ly15/is_there_a_more_powerful_way_to_communicate_with/
This is my first post here and I know very little about radios. My question
is basically is there a more powerful walkie that can communicate back and forth with FRS walkies?
My spouse and I do a lot of camping so were just looking for more powerful walkie talkies. I recently got my FRN and Im all registered there. Then I
got a pair of BAOFENG which work great with each other.
However, we sometimes travel with a group of other people who only have the
$20 Walmart FRS walkies. I did some research and am I correct that I cant broadcast on FRS channels on my BAOFENG? If Im correct, then is there a
walkie thats more than 2 watts that can broadcast back and forth with other
FRS walkies?
Any help would really be appreciated!
UPDATE: So to clarify I DO have my GMRS license. I thought the BAOFENG I
got were GMRS but evidently not. Can anyone recommend a good GMRS walkie talkie? And would it work on FRS channels too? submitted by

Trying to pass General
Posted: 15 Apr 2022 07:05 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u48t2r/trying_to_pass_general/
This will be my second time trying to pass the general exam. Not sure why it’s it’s just not taking. I’ve tried one if the online programs that advertise passing in a relative few hours by just giving you the exam
basically I’ve tried “normal” studying but it just not taking. I’m constantly bombing practice tests. I passed tech pretty much cold and just reviewing material.
Any suggestions, I’m trying not to admit that my 65 yo brain just isn’t processing things. submitted by /u/Craigccrncen

What's the point with these GSM POC Walkies/Radios? and Can i host my own server?
Posted: 15 Apr 2022 08:52 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u4pc7f/whats_the_point_with_these_gsm_poc_walkiesradios/
Recently discovered that there are gsm/lte based walkie talkies with nearly unlimited range because it communicates through cellular data (LTE/4G/3G).
But what the hell is the point then when your mobile phone is pretty much
the same thing. I understand theres a PTT function on these walkies but I
find it useless since the unit can do 2-way talking at same time just like
any phone anyway. I dont understand the use of these types of talkies.
In any case, is there a way to host your own server so that one does not
have to relay to 3rd party servers snooping in on conversations? (open
source software or cheap options) submitted by /u/remivato69
