Why is GPS a receiver and not a transceiver?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2022 04:52 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uai11g/why_is_gps_a_receiver_and_not_a_transceiver/

I apologized if Im on the wrong subreddit.
Why is GPS a receiver and not a transceiver? Doesnt the GPS in a smartphone need to send out a message to the satellites in order to get the location?
If thats the case wouldnt that be classified as a transceiver? submitted

    In a quandary

    Posted: 23 Apr 2022 04:45 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uahwh9/in_a_quandary/

What am I in a quandary about, that would be to renew my ARRL membership
that expires April 30th. I know Ive heard most all the reasons about band protection and the like.
I have for the past few years renewed yearly, and with the price hike of
the license recently, it makes me wonder just how hard they fought to keep
    it at what it was.
The magazines we are offered, Im not interested in them, I havent read a
one of them. The few times I have thumbed through a copy, it looked like
95% adds. This is from someone who has been licensed for a little over 28 years. I may renew again but for me to justify the $49, it gets tougher and tougher each time. submitted by /u/n8pu

I just finished another fun POTA activation (K-3503), as the first part of
the day. Now the second part, which will be a 5-mile hike in the woods. It
was nice to catch a 10m contact. All the others were 20m. submitted by /u/afpriest2007

    Radio Etiquette Question

    Posted: 23 Apr 2022 11:10 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uab9tf/radio_etiquette_question/

Ill be taking a vacation later this year. Trying to find out in advance
which repeaters are accessible (some online information is conflicting, or
else does not show the repeaters footprint). Ill be connecting to a couple
of repeaters digitally (through EchoLink and DMR) in order to find out this information. Looking to talk to local hams who know the situation.
Perhaps Im overthinking this, but what would you say when you first
connect? Just the usual? "<CALLSIGN> listening." Or announce your
intentions first? "<CALLSIGN> looking for information on local repeaters in area." submitted by /u/Richard_Sibbes

What's the REAL difference between mid-tier and high-tier HT radios?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2022 01:57 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uaenfi/whats_the_real_difference_between_midtier_and/

When I got my license a couple of weeks ago, I immediately bought a Baofeng UV5R, as I saw that it was said to be the "best beginner radio" by a lot of
HAM Youtubers and some online tier lists.
A friend of mine got his licence around the same time I did and did the
same thing. We went out on an expedition today and tried contacting our
    nearest repeater and...
I was getting through, and he wasnt. We had the same UV5Rs purchased from
the same vendor, both Baofengs being ordered together, and we also had the
    same antenna.
IMO, theres no way for this to be a meteorological thing, as we were side-by-side during the testing.
This incident brought us to thinking about getting better HT radios for ourselves, preferably ones that also support DMR, as we want to try it out.
I suggested we get something mid-end, like maybe a TYT MD-380, or MD-UV380, while he was thinking about getting something more high-end - Kenwood or
    Yaesu for example.
That, for one, got me wondering what the real difference between the
expensive and cheap radios is. Also, if I were to get a very expensive HT, which one should I get? I want to have an analog+digital radio for 2m and
70cm bands, capable of 5W+ transmission. submitted by /u/yamozha

Started getting RFI real badly on 2 meters after going down a bumpy trail
in my car. Thoughts on where to start diagnostics?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2022 01:55 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uaem52/started_getting_rfi_real_badly_on_2_meters_after/

Went down a rough trail today and after, I heard a "fluttering" sound on my radio at a frequency matching engine rpm. Any thoughts on what the cause
could be? Cracked plug? The engine seems to be running fine. Thanks

Bitx40 - Raduino X (Replacement raduino board) by WA6ISP - Anyone have documentation or tips?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2022 07:08 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uakfcm/bitx40_raduino_x_replacement_raduino_board_by/

Hi everyone! I got a second-hand BitX40 kit. Got it for free, worked on the test bench a while back and Im working on putting it together now.

    BitX40 Board (No Raduino)
Biggest issue has been figuring out the raduino. Im unsure how it works and
    how to test it.
The bitx40 comes with the original raduino, but there were also 2
replacement raduinos. These are the RaduinoX and the RaduinoUMax by WA6ISP. They apparently are much more stable and offer faster processing.
Sounds great! Id like to use them! Only issue is I have no idea how.
Apparently the pinout is different, and it wants me to test it somehow???
A lot of words in here. I dont know what they mean. Oh! USB port! I know
    that word!
If anyone has the schematics and / or any experience, I would be much appreciative.

Flexible conduit as a the primary loop for a Magnetic loop antenna

    Posted: 23 Apr 2022 10:06 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ua9yek/flexible_conduit_as_a_the_primary_loop_for_a/

Hi not that long ago I asked about mag loop construction and the responses
that I got said I should keep the loop as a single piece. So I thought
about it and realized that flexible metallic conduit exists. Could flexible metallic conduit be used in full or in part to make a mag loop antenna? submitted by /u/Independent_3

How active is the Salt Lake area?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2022 07:31 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ua6os5/how_active_is_the_salt_lake_area/

How active is the SLC area? I just passed my tech two weeks ago and bought
a Radioddity GS-5B with a Nagoya NA-771. I’ve been monitoring 146.52 in the mornings and evenings for over a week now and have heard all of one person
say “test, test, test” without announcing their callsign, so I know I can receive at least. I realize I could also just be in a bad location for a HT since I’m in a suburban part of town and there are a fair number of trees taller than the houses around here. submitted by /u/Activision19

FT5D - intermittent audio from jack?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2022 10:45 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uaargb/ft5d_intermittent_audio_from_jack/

I have a non Yaesu speaker mic that worked great for years with my VX5. Now that I have an FT5D, I use the same speaker mic but its not uncommon for
either the transmit or receive audio to cut out if I move it around. I
removed the rubber grommet from around the audio jack to make sure it wasnt pushing the plug out. It seems like rotating the plug causes the problem. I will just buy a new Yaesu speaker mic if I know other people have no issues with them. Does anybody have experience with this? Thanks. submitted by /u/DLiltsadwj

Trying to set up GMRS freqs on my IC2370a to scan. I’m aware I can’t TX on those channels. Tried to input freqs into memory. Radio wont to scroll thru those memories when done. I know radio can RX on GMRS freqs bc I’ve tested
w GMRS HT radio. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong? submitted
