How to tell if my QSO was long path? I worked Australia from Michigan this morning on 20m, the MUF map wasn't very favorable to the southwest, but to
the southeast it was wide open. But did I really make a 15,000 mile QSO
with only 20watts? Or did I make a 9000 mile QSO through bad conditions?

My callsign finally showed up on the IC/ISED website last night, but I'm
still kinda scared to throw out my call.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 07:43 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ufqatk/my_callsign_finally_showed_up_on_the_icised/

I tested my connection to the local repeater by setting one radio to listen
to the output freq while I keyed up the repeater on another radio (VA3XXX testing on XXX repeater).
I heard the call go through the repeater, but as soon as I tested, 2 other
guys started their own convo over me. I listened for at least 30sec to make sure no one else was using the repeater.

Too man HF antenna choices for a new ham. What to start with?

I’m in a standard residential neighborhood. Single story house with a chimney. Three palm trees in the backyard. I’ve looked at G5RV, dipoles, verticals, slopers, 49:1 EFHW, mag loops.
What would be a good starting antenna for HF? I don’t have a rig yet but I’m looking to start with an IC-7300 or similar rig.
I’m just overwhelmed with the choices and the high price tags. I’m willing to get an antenna tuner (manual probably). Just overwhelmed with the
    choices. submitted by /u/WillShattuck

    feedline through wall?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 11:18 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uftm7m/feedline_through_wall/

what are the best cheap options for passing a feedline through an exterior wall?
    I own my home.
    110 y/o wood frame construction.
Id like the option to patch the entry point and move it later if needed.
My radio uses UHF connectors but I am not married to that for the external connectors. obviously there are better options for feedline to the antenna.
I have a nice roll of window line just waiting for a use. Type N are

    EFHW - 40-10m or 80-10m

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 12:35 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ufibv8/efhw_4010m_or_8010m/

I put up this 65 foot long 40-10 meter End Fed Half Wave antenna last fall
when I got my HF radio. The UN-UN is mounted to the lower half of the
tripod atop my garage that the VHF antenna is on. The isolator at the far
end is tied to dacron line that extends another 20 or 25 feet to a spruce
    tree.

    https://preview.redd.it/1e5a5jyovpw81.jpg?width=868&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=daf6c0d2fcc3730771502460ee8527db48e6d8e2
I guess it works reasonably well on 40, 20, and 15 meters. 10 too but I
dont do much on there. Ive had SSB and FT8 contacts in 112 countries, 101
    or 102 confirmed.
Ive been toying with the idea of replacing it with an 80-10 meter version.
I know I cant get it up high enough to do 80m well, but Im kind of
interested in being able to play around on those other resonant bands --
    30, 17, and 12m. https://preview.redd.it/ev069kt4xpw81.jpg?width=898&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72720e48bdfea06dd833c9db0d964262b0683e6c
To do that Id have to put it into an L or < shape. I figure I could run it about 10 from the spruce before changing directions and heading to the oak
tree to the south. The antenna would end about 10 feet from there.
Are there any drawbacks to trying this? I dont really want to buy an
antenna and find it gets worse reception than what Ive got. submitted

    idea at the time, lol.
Does anyone have any suggestions for some sites dealing with vintage

was bigger than any fold out I ever found in the magazines of my youth! Im betting theres a community out there somewhere. Suggestions? submitted

Mobile HF information concerning which meters to use

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 11:20 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ufgtoa/mobile_hf_information_concerning_which_meters_to/

Blogs and forums left me as uncertain as I had been before researching this question.
Preparing to test for General come June for a few reasons: not much on 2m
and 70cm going on in my rural State of Wyoming plus, since the CB SSB hay
days of the 1970’s and “skip land” (I still listen to those running linear
on CB channel 6), I adore DX.
As it pertains to Amateur DX, my interest is within the lower 48.
I’m wanting to get a mobile rig and am conflicted about 10m or 6m or is the
a better choice for mobile DX?
That you bothered to read this message, I’m appreciative. I’m sure to be immensely grateful for help. submitted by /u/2meters_70cm

A Different Style of High Ratio Transformer - Example Two

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 06:32 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ufb5q2/a_different_style_of_high_ratio_transformer/

Here is another transformer that was done on a latter day. This is on the
table with an antenna analyzer and 2450 ohm resistor connected. Covers 1.8
to 30 MHz with good SWR. Note the dual wire primary in the test made from
16 gauge speaker wire. The secondary has 14 turns. The toroid is 45-50 mm Outside Diameter. The pestle is just used a non-metallic weight to hold a
wire steady during testing. Note how the windings are on less than half the toroid as it gave better test results.
Some builders put a 100 pF capacitor across the SO-239 terminals to improve
SWR on 10-15 meters. Some people put a 5-6 turn coil at 78 inches out from
the transformer or place a 200-500 pF at the mid-point of a 130 foot
    radiator.
In this example the primary and secondary share a connection to the feed
point - an auto-transformer. Place the transformer in a 4x4x2 PVC box with
1/4 inch stainless steel hardware, connect a 128-132 foot wire and a 3 to 7 percent counterpoise. For more information about using the multiple
parallel primary wires check out the AF7NX website at https://squashpractice.com/2021/07/20/engineering-the-efhw-491-transformer-and-antenna/

    XIEGU G90 : AGC

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 09:00 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ufe1ah/xiegu_g90_agc/

Perhaps is just my personal feeling, but the AGC Slow, set for sideband reception, has a release time still too short, compared to MIL STD
requirements (188-141). So the result is a s/n ratio lower the could be if
just this release time, could be set longer. In the 188-141 this value is foresee between 800 to 1200 mS.
Of course this rig arent design for such std. but should be refer to ?
Having a DSP to control this kind of stuff, isnt too hard to reach such improvements.
The minimum audio level, although latest firmware upgrade always too high.
So from mute a first step is already too high. Also in my car (WV Touran)
the volume control has arrange with an optical encoder, but behave like a potentiometer.
Third concern, is the tuning power level : its not safe for the ATU perform
    the tuning at full power.
Yes We can set the power for 2 watt, TUNING and then set again the Power
    for full..

Reducing interference for my receive only antenna(s)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 01:42 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uf71kq/reducing_interference_for_my_receive_only_antennas/

I have a few days off work so Im going to try and get the interference
reduced. I am currently using two versions of this antenna, (one for
    air-band and one for 40m).
I followed this design for my antenna which currently has two feed lines.
(can this be reduced to one feedline?)
So! all tips considered :) will a balon help and what type? is core
material (that) important with a receive only antenna?
Here is a pic of my antenna

Did i mention im absolutely completely new to this, prob been playing about
for a few months. Ive started with an rtl-sdr but I am already noticing the limitations of it so an Airspy HF discovery will be ordered in the next few days. It would be nice to get the antennas all sorted for its arrival. I
have took a greater interest in the Low and Medium frequency bands but
space will be an issue building antennas for these bands. submitted by /u/fu11circ1e
