THE SARL 100 PROJECT

How old is the SARL really? We have recently come across information from
a couple of old scrapbooks from the garage of a radio amateur, that he
got from a deceased estate, which indicates that the SARL could be olde
r than we think, we are conducting further research to verify how old th
e SARL really is. This is an example of some of the interesting and exciti
ng information that is being discovered while delving through documents lo oking for historical events related to the SARL and the organisations prec eding the SARL.

How can you help us with this project? We need your help to gather informa tion, especially from the magazines. You will be provided with templates
to facilitate the collection.

We are also in need of items and information which is with amateurs, thi
s is not only for the museum but also for the book. We are also looking fo
r the programmes of previous AGMs as well as photos with descriptions and
identification of persons in the photos, if possible.
Are you aware of any inventions or contributions to science and technology
that was made by radio amateurs over the years? It is important that we g
et this information.

We will collect all books, items and information that you may have, fr
om you and return them again to you if you require them back, or you can
contact us and we will tell you how you can document, scan or photograp
h the items for us. If anyone is of the opinion that he or she has so much
information for us and should be visited regarding information, please
let us know so that we can arrange a time for the visit, or if you want

CONTEST NEWS

The third leg of the SARL Wednesday 80 m Club Contest will be run from 17:
00 to 18:00 UTC on Wednesday 18 May with CW, RTTY and phone activity. CW
and RTTY contacts count 3 points while phone contacts count 2 points. You
also earn 2 points for each new grid square and 1 point for each new Club
worked. Submit your log by 21:59 UTC on Monday 23 May to contest@sarl.org

The 46 VHF/UHF Group is hosting the first leg of the SARL VHF/UHF Digital
contest on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May 2022. Activity takes place on 6
and 2 metres as well as on 70 centimetres. The contest has been divided i
nto time slots where all the contesters are working 2 hour time slots per
band. This was done to concentrate the activity in such a way that more s tations can be worked by having all the stations on the same band. On Satu
rday from 03:00 to 05:00 UTC activity is on 6 metres, from 05:00 to 07:0
0 UTC on 2 metres and from 07:00 to 11:00 UTC on 70 cm. On Sunday we start
on 2 m then go to 6 m and end off on 70 cm The exchange is an RSQ report
and your 6-character Maidenhead grid locator. Submit your log sheet by 23
:59 CAT on Sunday 27 March 2022 by e-mail to sarlvhfuhfcontest@gmail.com ( mailto:sarlvhfuhfcontest@gmail.com) . All the information can be found on

The first leg of the YOTA Contest. This CW and SSB operating event, orga
nized by the IARU Region 1 Youth Working Group in cooperation with MRASZ (
the Hungarian Amateur Radio Society), takes place from 08:00 to 19:59 UT

Forty-six logs were received for the second leg of the SARL Saturday 40 m
Club Contest held on 30 April. It is noted that participants struggle to

receipt will be sent out when the log sheet arrives.

PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at low to moderate levels. There are currently four sunspots with simp
le to complex magnetic configurations visible. There is a high probability
for C- and moderate probability for M-class flaring. If you want to do yo
ur own frequency predictions, the expected effective sunspot number for
the week will be around 71. The 10 to 30 m bands may provide some good DX

DIE SARL 100 PROJEK

Hoe oud is die SARL werklik? Ons het onlangs op inligting afgekom uit 'n p
aar ou plakboeke uit die motorhuis van 'n radio amateur wat hy uit 'n best
orwe boedel gekry het, wat aandui dat die SARL ouer kan wees as wat ons
dink, ons doen verdere navorsing om te verifieer hoe oud die SARL is re
gtig. Hierdie is 'n voorbeeld van sommige van die interessante en opwinden
de inligting wat ontdek word terwyl jy deur dokumente delf op soek na hist oriese gebeure wat verband hou met die SARL en die organisasies wat die SA
RL voorafgaan.

Hoe kan jy ons help met hierdie projek? Ons het jou hulp nodig om inligtin
g in te samel, veral uit die tydskrifte. Jy sal voorsien word van sjablo
ne om die versameling te vergemaklik.

Ons benodig ook snuisterye en inligting wat by amateurs is, nie net vir
die museum nie, maar ook vir die boek. Ons is ook opsoek na programme v
an vorige AJV's asook fotos met beskrywings en identifikasie van die perso
ne op die foto, indien dit moontlik is. Is jy bewus van enige uitvinding
s of bydraes tot wetenskap en tegnologie wat oor die jare deur radio amate
urs gemaak is. Dit is belangrik dat ons hierdie inligting kry.

Ons sal alle boeke, snuisterye en inligting wat jy by jou mag hê,
afhaal en dit weer aan jou terugbesorg indien jy dit terug verlang, of
jy kan ons kontak en ons sal jou vertel hoe jy die items vir ons kan doku menteer, skandeer of fotografeer. Indien iemand van mening is dat hy of
sy soveel inligting vir ons het en dat ons jou moet besoek rakende die i nligting, laat weet ons asseblief sodat ons 'n tyd vir die besoek kan re
