    The South African Radio League broadcasts a news bulletin each Sunday in A frikaans and English at 08:15 and 08:30 Central African Time respectively
    on HF and various VHF and UHF repeaters around the country. The bulletin

    We start our bulletin with news of two silent keys.

    It is with deep regret that we announce that the key of James Gardener,
    ZS1ROY went silent on Saturday 21 August 2021. The SARL Office was only n otified this week. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and fri ends.

    It is with deep regret that we announce that the key of Kelvin Killian,
    ZS5IW went silent on Saturday 14 May 2022. He wrote and passed the RAE in
    2005 and was awarded the Arland Usher Gold Pen for the highest exam marks
    . Kelvin will be missed by the daily Maritime Net, where he was involved
    for many years as High Sea Net Controller. We extend our sincere condolen
    ces to his family and friends.

    SARL MEMBERSHIP INVOICES

    The membership fees for Ordinary and Overseas members have changed from R4
    98 to R500. All the other classes of membership have remained the same as
    last year. The membership invoices will be sent out in the coming week as
    the Office has been busy with the RAE process.

    Kelley asks that no duplicate e-mail addresses are to be used for family m embers. Each member must have his or her own e-mail address. This helps wi
    th the database management and the invoicing process. Further, she asks
    that when you pay your membership, only use your call sign as the refer
    ence on the EFT or deposit.

    HAMCHALLENGE 2022

    In SARL News of 8 May 2022, information was given about the IARU Region
    1 Hamchallenge 2022. The Jeugland ARC has submitted an idea to IARU Regio
    n 1 and will have to wait until the results are made known at Ham Radio in
    Friedrichshafen, which runs from 24 to 26 June. All the best to the Jeu
    gland team!

    THE TOP BAND QSO PARTY IN JUNE

    The West Rand ARC would like to invite all radio amateurs to take part in
    the SARL Top Band QSO Party from 8 to 12 June. The Top Band is 160 metres
    , so start your antenna construction. This is also the ideal time to wor
    k towards your Top Band certificate. All the contest information can be fo
    und on page 38 of the 2022 SARL Blue Book.

    To prepare for the QSO Party, the West Rand Club is planning a Teck Talk
    on the 160 m contest and topics such as antenna types, logging, and t
    he contest rules. This will take place at 19:00 CAT on Tuesday 24 May via

    CONTEST LOG SHEETS

    Gerhard, ZS3TG from the Northern Cape ARC has reported that the zs3nc@qs
    l.net (mailto:zs3nc@qsl.net) e-mail is problematic. They have extended the
    closing date for log sheets to Tuesday 24 May. The Club will acknowledge
    the receipt of your log sheet.

    Log sheets for the SARL 80 m Club contest must only be sent to contest@sar l.org.za (mailto:contest@sarl.org.za) and not any other e-mail address.

    THE WORKED ALL CONTINENTS AWARD

    The Worked All Continents (WAC) award is sponsored by the International Am ateur Radio Union (IARU) and is issued for working and confirming all six
    continents. This means one QSO with each of North America, South Americ
    a, Oceania, Asia, Europe and Africa. A total of 6 QSOs.

    A Five-Band Worked All Continents award is also available. You must work a
    nd confirm all six continents on each of the 5 primary Amateur bands of 80
    , 40, 20, 15 and 10 Metres. The Five-Band WAC is strictly a band-onl
    y award, it cannot be endorsed on any mode. For more information, visi

    CLUB NEWS

    Thursday 26 May is time for the Sandton Tech Talk. If you are interested i
    n what is really going on overhead, then do not miss this Talk. Our spec
    ial guest is renowned satellite guru, Tom Van den Bon, ZR6TG and he wi
    ll instruct us on how best to listen in on satellites, to receive and de
    code their telemetry, and why you would want to. Yes, their telemetry
    , so now you can spy on the satellites that are spying on you, especia
    lly as Tom will provide a list of resources to make it easy. The Tech Talk
    is at 19:00 CAT this Thursday 26 May 2022 on the 145,700 repeater, as
    well as via Echolink ZS6STN-R. Call-ins start at 18:45 and all are welcom
    e. Please come and spend the hour with us and enjoy the knowledge sharing.

    The West Rand Amateur Radio Club invites everybody to the boot sale on Sat urday 28 May at the Clubhouse in Kroton Street, Weltevreden Park. The ga

    What are you doing on Sunday 29 May? The Sandton ARC is hosting an open so
    cial picnic braai and a family-friendly Fox hunting event at the Field and
    Study Centre in Parkmore Sandton on from 10:00 CAT and you are invited. T
    he park is family and pet friendly with bathrooms. All you must bring alon
    g is your family, friends, food, drinks and utensils and oh yes, a
    handy talkie and antenna if you will participate in the rescue of Fred an
    d Fiona, our two radio foxes who we understand from their last garbled c
    ell phone contact have gotten themselves horribly lost in the park and nee
    d rescuing.

    Lucky for them they are equipped with VHF emergency rescue beacons that wi
    ll be active on the day. All young rescuers will receive a goodie bag from
    Fred and Fiona as a thank you. Please join us for a social and picnic or
    braai (braai coals will be available), and a super outing with friends
    , family and fellow amateurs, and perhaps also Fred and Fiona - if the

    CONTEST NEWS

    The first leg of the AWA Valve QSO Party was held on 7 and 8 May. For the
    AM QSO Party, only 2 logs were submitted from the 29 participants.

    2nd Johan van Zyl, ZS4DZ - 11 points

    For the SSB QSO Party, 8 logs were submitted from the 78 participants.

    1st Chris Avenant, ZS6CPA - 60 points

    3rd Johan van Zyl, ZS4DZ - 43 points

    The ZS0AWA station scored 24 points in AM QSO Party and 100 points in SSB
    QSO Party. It was disappointing to see the lack of valve radios used in t
    he contest, but congratulations to the high scorers. Thanks to all who t
    ook part.

    Four logs were received for the first leg of the Early Morning Coffee QSO
    Party held on Wednesday 11 May.

    PROPAGATION REPORT

    Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
    be at moderate levels. There are currently seven sunspots with simple to
    complex magnetic configurations visible. There is a high probability for
    C- and moderate probability for M-class flaring. If you want to do your o
    wn frequency predictions, the expected effective sunspot number for the
    week will be around 126. The 10 to 30 metre bands will especially late af ternoon, provide some good DX fun. 6 metre may also have some pleasant s urprises waiting. For more information, please visit the website .

    Die Wesrand ARK nooi graag alle radio amateurs uit om van 8 tot 12 Junie a
    an die SARL Top Band QSO Partytjie deel te neem. Die Top Band is 160 meter

    g van al ses kontinente. Dit beteken een QSO met elk van Noord-Amerika,
    Suid-Amerika, Oseanië, Asië, Europa en Afrika. Altesaam 6
    QSOs.

    'n Vyf-Band Werk Alle Kontinente toekenning is ook beskikbaar. Jy moet al
    ses kontinente op elk van die 5 primêre Amateur-bande van 80, 40
    , 20, 15 en 10 meter werk en bevestig. Die Vyf-Band WAC is streng sleg
    s 'n band-toekenning, dit kan nie op enige modus onderskryf word nie. Be

    Donderdag 26 Mei is tyd vir die Sandton "Tech Talk." As jy

    Wat doen jy op Sondag 29 Mei? Die Sandton ARK bied vanaf 10:00 SAT 'n oop
    sosiale piekniek-braai en 'n gesinsvriendelike jakkalsjag-geleentheid by
    die Veld- en Studiesentrum in Parkmore Sandton aan en jy word uitgenooi.
    Die park is gesin- en troeteldier vriendelik met badkamers. Al wat jy moe
    t saambring is jou familie, vriende, kos, drinkgoed en toebehore en
    o ja, 'n hand-radio en antenna as jy gaan deelneem aan die redding van
    Fred en Fiona, ons twee radio-jakkalse wat ons verstaan â-‹â-

    l het in die park en gered moet word.

    Gelukkig vir hulle is hulle toegerus met VHF noodreddingsbakens wat op die
    dag aktief sal wees. Alle jong redders sal 'n â-˜goodie bagâ-
    (tm) van Fred en Fiona as dankie ontvang. Sluit asseblief by ons aan vir 'n
    kuier en piekniek of braai (braai-kole sal beskikbaar wees) en 'n super u itstappie saam met vriende, familie en mede-amateurs en dalk ook Fred en

    KOMPETISIE NUUS

    Die eerste been van die ADV Buis QSO Partytjie is op 7 en 8 Mei gehou. Vir
    die AM QSO Partytjie is slegs 2 logstate van die 29 deelnemers ingedien.

    Die ZS0AWA-stasie het 24 punte in AM QSO Partytjie en 100 punte in ESB QSO
    Partytjie behaal. Dit was teleurstellend om die gebrek aan buis-radio's w
    at in die kompetisie gebruik word te sien, maar baie geluk aan die hoÃ
    « punte makers. Dankie aan almal wat deelgeneem het.

    Vier logstate is ontvang vir die eerste been van die Vroeë Oggend Kof
    fie QSO Partytjie wat op Woensdag 11 Mei gehou is.

    tig gaan wees. Tans is daar sewe sonvlekke met eenvoudige tot gevorderde m agnetiese samestellings sigbaar. Daar is 'n hoë waarskynlikheid vir d
    ie voorkoms van C- en 'n laer waarskynlikheid vir die voorkoms van M-klas
    sonfakkels. Diegene wat hulle eie frekwensievoorspellings wil doen, kan
    'n verwagte effektiewe sonvlektelling van 126 vir die week gebruik. Radio
    amateurs kan veral laatmiddag goeie DX openinge op die 10 tot 30 m bande
