Signed up for a zoom exam last night through hamstudy.org and passed this morning! There were 4 fellas on the zoom call to proctor the exam and they
were a riot! Funny guys. The one fella told me once i pass my general Im required to spend $1000 on a refrigerator sized radio lol.
They asked me if i wanted to take my general while I had them on the call
too, but Im in need of some studying before then haha.
Really looking forward to getting my callsign next week hopefully!
Thanks to everyone here who encouraged me, and many thanks for sharing hamstudy.org! Great learning app that made the tech exam easy.
Yall are the greatest, and I cant wait to get on the air! submitted by /u/treskaz

Design a rig with one purpose: maximally reliable SSB phone contacts from Georgia (USA) to Russia.

What the title says - if one had a reasonable budget and wanted to design
for this purpose, how would you do it? “Maximally reliable,” of course, is a relative term; I’m also curious what you think the hard limits would
    be. submitted by /u/Nink

In order of acquisition Pofung/Baofeng BF8H-HP Yaesu FT-70 Realistic (radioshack) HTX-100 10m Yaesu FTM-100 Xiegu G90 Yaesu FTM-7250 (in the

I really like the HTX-100 good sound reports and its got that 90s feel to

    Good morning!
Ive been playing with FT-8 for the past couple of months. Its been great
with my cruddy XYL acceptable antenna. So for I worked 49 of the 50 states. Maine is the only one Im missing. I havent seen any Maine stations on FT-8 during the times that Im on the air that I have propagation to the
surrounding states and parts of Canada. If you or anyone you know is in
Maine that would be willing to try a scheduled contact to get my last
    state, please let me know.
    Thanks and 73,

Good dual band HT antenna for mountains of eastern KY

    Posted: 29 May 2022 03:25 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v0lz8o/good_dual_band_ht_antenna_for_mountains_of/

    Hey all!
Im about 15-18ish miles (as the crow flies) from the closest 2m/70cm
repeaters in my area. I live in a remote area of eastern KY in mountainous terrain. Luckily I do not live down in the bottom of a valley and have some decent elevation at my house. What would be a good HT antenna that may
allow me to reach these repeaters? I just got the Yaesu FT-5DR and I have
an older Yaesu FT-60 both with stock antennas and so far it seems I cannot
    hit these repeaters.
-the other night I went to bed and had forgot to turn off my FT-60 which
was monitoring one of the repeaters. Around 2am it received a signal from
that repeater with the recorded station name and morse code message and it
woke me up from a dead sleep lol. So I feel pretty confident that i may be
able to reach these repeaters if i invest in a better antenna.
**I also have an FT-8900R with power supply and will take recommendations
on a good quad-band mobile antenna I can set up at home also**

Anyone know of a reference on antenna theory (specifically dipoles) that's authoritative enough for the FDA?

    Posted: 29 May 2022 08:24 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v0dgg4/anyone_know_of_a_reference_on_antenna_theory/

Short question: if I wanted to state "the characteristic impedance of a 1/2 wave dipole is 73.1 ohms at a frequency sightly below 1/2 wavelength of the signal" and "the characteristic impedance of a folded dipole is 4x that of
the dipole", what is a good reference to cite?
Longer version: Im using amateur radio at work. Im validating a couple of electromagnetic simulation solvers to model an MRI coil. Validating solvers usually works by comparing hand-calculable results or physical testing to
    your simulation output.
For a transient thermal solver, I used a steady-state problem that was calculated by hand. For an elastic mechanical solver, a colleague used a
four point bend simulation compared to a hand bending calculation and also
    did a physical test.
For our EM simulation, weve been stumped. Were only using nearfield, and
most of our ideas require farfield behavior (single slit/double slit diffraction, airy disk diffraction), or eat up too much ram (dielectric
sphere scattering). We could cite physics textbooks for these.
I thought about ham radio and drew a dipole, fed it with a 73.1 ohm feed,
and ran a sweep. The lowest SWR calculated by the software occurred just
under the frequency that was slightly under 1/2 wavelength, as expected.
Then I drew an element parallel to the dipole and connected the ends and
made it a folded dipole. I upped the feed impedance by 4, and again
measured minimal VSWR frequency just below 1/2 wave.
So, to make the claim that a dipole is expected to have an impedance of 73
ohms slightly below 1/2 wavelength, and a folded dipole is expected to have
4x the impedance of a dipole, does anyone know of a reference that I can
cite? I think ARRL or equivalent international group would be sufficient. Military references have worked in the past, too. It doesnt have to be peer reviewed in "Nature" level of authority. But I cant use one of the many
blogs that so many hams write (theyre awesome! But not really
    authoritative).
Im also comparing the e-field radiation pattern and polarization, but this
isnt as strong since I dont have the memory to make the simulation domain
to be 10 wavelengths in each direction, so Im only looking at the e-field
that hasnt fully resolved to a far-field pattern yet. But citing these
would be great, also. submitted by /u/Kale

Basically Id have new messages come in from a python script and using a terminal program I could just do -cat cw 50wpm "example message1" Then when
its finished it transmits the next message

Im mainly interested in getting a license for emergency communication,
because my area has gotten some unusually severe weather this past year.
But of course, for general communication as well it would be nice to have. I’ve read online about joining a radio club, but where i live its very

    Advice for technician test tomorrow?

    Posted: 28 May 2022 09:20 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v03hs6/advice_for_technician_test_tomorrow/

wondering, I studied for approx 8 hours in 2 sittings today. I went through basically every single question and section on two HAM study apps and have
been taking taking practice tests on hamexam.org and have been consistently scoring above 80%. Any advice for me tomorrow? I will be taking it

Any experiences on 5W on 2M/440 in Sequioa/King's Canyon National Park
    (Route CA-180)?

    Posted: 29 May 2022 03:18 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v089g3/any_experiences_on_5w_on_2m440_in_sequioakings/

I am going to be visiting the park soon, and if youve been there, you know
that the canyon is remote, deep, and has Federal Lands on both sides of the valley. Little to no civilization. The valley is about a 1-2 miles wide
with around 4000 elevation gain on both sides.
Cell service is non-existent or was the last time I was there (not atypical
for western NPS sites), so Im looking for a backup incase of emergency. Has anyone had any experiences operating in the canyon along Highway 180?
Im doubtful unless Im fortunate enough to encounter someone else on simplex
on the peak (Sequoia National Park/Forest), unless there is a repeater Im
not seeing in the usual places; or possibly rangers monitoring amateur
bands. Im not finding (much, or much current information) about any amateur services that might be accessible.
A more reasonable question is if push came to shove and I came up the hill (~30-45 minutes by car) could someone on the crest of the Sequioas reach Central Valley repeaters?
