Visiting another province with radio

Is there a proper way to identify on the air when travelling between
Canadian provinces with a radio? (I’m at VA3 Ontario ham) is it the same as when going to the states - add the local provincial prefix as a /suffix? Is
it even necessary?

Jim W6LG my YouTube Channel Hacked and Suspended, Gone, Nothing There
Posted: 05 Jun 2022 03:58 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v5azgu/jim_w6lg_my_youtube_channel_hacked_and_suspended/
Someone hacked my YouTube channel and before I could get control back, it
was gone. I never got an email from YouTube because someone changed, for
about an hour or two, my email address to some site in India. Yes, it was changed to a university in India. I have asked YouTube for help and gotten nothing from them. In no way, at no time, did I ever violate any YouTube
TOS.
At this time I am being treated for the first stage of leukemia. I also
have neutropenia, very severe osteoporosis, lung and heart damage. All are related and all are terminal. I had hoped that my legacy of helping ham
radio operators would continue after I die. So it does not help to have the stress of my channel being suspended. I need to put my effort into my
health care and not trying to get my channel back.
I had about 200 videos and 41,000 subscribers. All of that is one. I am devastated. If you know of a way to help me, please let me know. I am Jim Heath, W6LG licensed in 1964. Thank you. submitted by

I made my first ISS contact last night. I need more practice.

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v5h84h/i_made_my_first_iss_contact_last_night_i_need/
I bought a cross-band capable Wouxun a couple weeks ago, programmed it for
the ISS repeater, and Ive been trying it out. Last night was a good high
pass over San Diego. With my tape measure yagi built for 2m, I could hear stations form Utah to Northern Mexico. I started throwing out call signs,
and finally got a response, and a good signal report, from someone ONLY 100 miles away! Then I told them a wrong grid square. I must have been nervous
and excited by hearing my sign called back amidst the super fast pace of experienced sat operators.
Oh well, it was fun, I learned that my equipment works, and it will keep me trying for better results. submitted by /u/scrotalus

For those of you who were licensed after the FCC started enforcing the fee,
how long did it take?
Posted: 06 Jun 2022 08:14 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v65szw/for_those_of_you_who_were_licensed_after_the_fcc/
I have a friend who tested for their tech license 2 Saturdays ago and they still have not received their call sign or receieved an email. Back when I
was licensed, I had to wait on snail mail which ended up being something
like 2 weeks. Ive been hearing that by already having the FRN, some people
are getting their calls next day but that was BEFORE the fee structure was enabled. Given were less than 2 months into this new license / fee
paradigm, I just dont know what to tell them to expect.
If you sat for your test after the Apr 19th date, how long did it take to
get the "you need to pay the fee" email?
After you paid, how long did it take to get your call issued? submitted

Theoretical radio transmitter
Posted: 05 Jun 2022 03:35 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v5oe14/theoretical_radio_transmitter/
Hi friends, Im new to the field with no technical experience, only
theoretical. I am writing a story about a boy who makes a radio transmitter
to the stars. I am wondering about the feasibility of building a 5.68 GHz transmitter with high directionality and gain (thinking 2-5 m dish). From
my research, this looks to be in the amateur band, but I want to make sure
it would be legal to operate this device. Would you need a license to do
so? Is there a limit to the signal strength? Im thinking in the 100-1000W range.
The boys signal would be directed at Barnards Star in the Ophiuchus constellation (right ascension 17h 57m, declination +04° 41′). Part of the story is the signal being detected on earth from a bounce. I know earth-moon-earth bounce communication should be feasible at this frequency/energy, but Im wondering if its possible for an off angle signal
to somehow still be detected from a bounce.
Really thankful for any help, Im excited to try to get the science right in this story. If its not possible, Ill have to make an excuse for the boy to
send a signal to the moon, maybe a test signal, but it would be really cool
to figure out how to get a bounce back from a signal sent to Barnards
Star. submitted by /u/cornyjoe

Repeaters in the NYC (Manhattan) area?

Im wondering if anyone in the Manhattan area has any experience with the
areas repeaters and can give me a quick rundown of which ones I should be programming for. Repeaterbook is a great resource for finding repeaters,
but thats where its utility mostly ends. Im headed down to NYC next week, (staying only a couple blocks north of times square) so Im just trying to figure out which of the many repeaters are worth actually looking into
activity wise. I have VHF/UHF conventional/P25 available, so Im sure theres
at least something, Im just trying to get a starting point. submitted

Simplest, budget setup for HF
Posted: 05 Jun 2022 04:39 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v5pm0f/simplest_budget_setup_for_hf/
Im looking to get on HF, and seem to gravitate to the 20m band when just listening. Any suggestions on the most cost effective way to do this? Im assuming the bare minimum Id need is a transceiver and a power supply. For
the antenna, I plan on using a wire in my attic. Max length in a straight
line would be about 30 feet, and Im not looking to push a lot of power. Is
this even feasible? Not sure I should waste my time trying if I wouldnt
make many contacts. submitted by /u/physical_kid

Telescopic Masts for Homebrew Vertical Antenna
Posted: 05 Jun 2022 06:57 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v5s3et/telescopic_masts_for_homebrew_vertical_antenna/
Hi all. I just saw a review of the Eagle One Vertical Antenna. I’ve also
seen POTA/SOTA activators using some sort of telescoping pole/mast. For the last 15 minutes I searched but can’t find any kind of mast that isn’t over $100 or above 20’. I’m looking for something about 33’ tall so I can play with 1/2 wave 20m antennas and then 1/4 40m with a counterpoise. I’d like
to do it myself so I can learn to tune the wire and learn to make the
antenna. I also want to use it for slopers and some inverted V dipoles. So where do these poles exist? Thanks. submitted by /u/WillShattuck

Are any low cost mobile transceivers worth it?
Posted: 06 Jun 2022 12:02 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v5wx3i/are_any_low_cost_mobile_transceivers_worth_it/
Im a UK intermediate aiming towards full. I have a medium term aim to have
a kit that I can drop into the passenger seat of a work/hire/wifes car,
clip an antenna mount onto the window edge, plug into the aux port and be
away. This might also double as an out and about with battery/mains adaptor with a portable mast and antenna/slim jim up a tree or hotel room window.
For a charity I volunteer with it would also be useful to be able to
monitor the simple business license frequencies (ideally dual monitor one
of these and local amateur repeater).
Ive seen a few sub £100 mobile transceivers recently which would make this plan more feasible in the shorter term. And some of them seem to have an
array of interesting features such as crossband repeat, quad monitor,.. is there a step up to the around £300 thats worth it? Is there a step up to
£500 thats worth it again?
Its relatively low priority for me as Id rather put the money into a ht
with a better front end and better antenna but I like to map out the
future. I think what I really want is an HT which can do a bit more power
when on a battery eliminator or plugged in but I dont seem to be able to
find that. submitted by /u/EdinDevon

dont have the possibility to hang cables outside the house. I found some antennas on amazon but I would like to hear your opinion because I heard
many people saying to build a "broomstick".
these are the ones I found on amazon:

VOX on Yaesu FT2D?
Posted: 05 Jun 2022 02:04 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v5mken/vox_on_yaesu_ft2d/
I’m trying to send PSK31 via 2M on my Yaesu FT2D. I can receive, but can’t get the rig to key the radio. I’ve seen some references that suggest VOX is necessary to use this radio in this way, but even after going over the
manual, I cannot find how to turn VOX on, if it’s even possible.
Does this radio even have VOX?
For further info, I’m using a Digirig with a Yaesu HT connector.
Last time I tried ask this question in a group I didn’t get answers but got lots of “why would you want to do this”? Well, I suffered an injury a couple years ago that has left me hearing impaired and I still like to
enjoy radio.

Why no integrated digital audio in affordable HF transceivers?
Posted: 05 Jun 2022 06:02 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v5cx8d/why_no_integrated_digital_audio_in_affordable_hf/
It’s 2022, and none of the HF transceivers from the big three brands priced under $1k has an easy computer connection, despite the fact that 60+% of HF contacts are now digital. So many of the popular TNC/sound card devices
seem very homebrewed and are far too expensive a cost for so simple a
function. Not to mention that the drivers are usually far behind my OS.
The FT-891 has a USB port, but from what I understand, it is only for CAT control, and you still need a TNC or custom cable to make the data
connection.
I have an idea for Yaesu and Icom. Bring back the FT-450 or the IC-718.
Stick in a class-compliant USB audio interface (no driver needed, probably
a $5 part) and integrate it with the VOX circuit. Sell it for $500. You can even get rid of AM mode if it makes it cheaper: SSB, DATA, CW. These would
sell like crazy.
I’m so sick of the alternative: pay the price of a used Rolex for overkill tech to get a simple thing done, or pay (still) hundreds to cobble a
solution together with 90s-era tech (even if it’s manufactured brand new)
and a soldering gun. Seriously it should not be expensive to transmit a
beep over the airwaves.
So what am I missing? Is there a way in which this impasse—which surely prevents people from getting into the hobby—makes sense to you? submitted by /u/1KilgoreTrout
