Yes, that forehead slap was me. Fortunately, I was using my non-CW hand. Relatively new ham, whose understanding of the bureau has been
improving :-) First delivery: "Why is someone in a different state sending
me cards from places Ive worked outside my country? Our call signs arent
even close!"
Second delivery: Oh, so thats a bureau. Read through the long description
the incoming bureau had, then sent them a few large, self-addressed extra-stamped envelopes. Since they didnt do outbound, I mailed individual
QSL cards. Hand cramps from writing in tiny print to match line-wraps on profiles (in case that matters). Also expensive.
Third delivery: "Hey, I can send the batch of cards to ARRL with some
money and theyll do it." followed by "Boy, digging through QRZ profiles for addresses is tedious." Today: [Rereads ARRL guidelines] fist-pump,
rejoicing.

The average time between QSO and receiving the batch was two years. Longest
was 22 years, which is probably someone playing catch-up and the
destination being ambiguous when the original call sign owner became a

Astron RS-70M powers up (meters light up) but no power to radio. I checked
the ceramic fuse and its good. What my next step?

It was working last night then stopped. It would turn on but the voltage
meter needle would not move (set to 13.8 VDC). No power to my RigRunner
4008 or radio (TS-480HX).
I think my RS-70M is a 2014 model. I’m not really set up to do an in-depth analysis and not confident in digging around it.

Using a bunch of wire laid on the ground as RF ground | Using a miniwhip

I got a new miniwhip antenna that id like to use for RX. I know that i need
a good ground for that type of antenna to work. However, i plan to use it
in my car so i cant just whap a bunch of rods in the ground whereever i go.
I had the idea of just getting some wire (1.5mm2 / 16AGW), connecting it to
the shield of my coax, and laying them out on the floor because they should have a capacitance to ground and therefore should act as a sort of ground
for my antenna. Is that a good idea or does it work?
Also, i plan to add a stationary miniwhip to my house, mounting it just
under my (wooden) roof for weather and lightning protection. Would the
wooden roof interfer with RX? And about RF ground, I got access to the conductive concrete fundament of the house so i could run a ~7m (22ft) wire there to use as my ground. does that make sense or would the long run of
wire "degrade" my ground?

Update on my G5RV installation

I used rope and rocks, got the G5RV hung. Last night I made my first HF
contact on 40m. The antenna still needs to be a tiny bit higher and Im
going to rent a pole saw tomorrow to trim branches in the way. It will not

What happened to the simple CW-only rigs?

As I find myself learning CW, Id really like to set up a little QRP CW
station, sort of over HF phone at this point in the hobby.
When I first was licensed, there were a ton of companies making CW-only
kits - Ten Tec, Wilderness, then Elecraft, OHR, etc. Nowadays, it seems
like things are either more feature-laden that Id want (KX3, KX2) or are
copies of what seems to be the same Arduino based SDR-style rig with a
front LCD.

I havent settled on which radio to use for car radio. For space reasons, limiting myself to one car radio and one antenna. and for budget reasons,
would prefer to not have to buy a tuner. Considering buying a used FT-857D
from a local ham, but theres no point in going through with the purchase
unless I can get an affordable antenna that utilizes enough of its bands.
In theory, an FT-857 plus a Super Antenna would give the widest coverage
from what Ive been able to figure out with my research. If any of you can
think of a better combination, please post here and let me know!
Ill probably buy a Super Antenna or Tarheel eventually, but I would prefer
a cheaper option if there is such a thing. The bands Im most interested in currently are 10 meters and 2 meters. 20 would be nice as well, and
everything else is a bonus. So my second question here, is whether there
would be a cheaper antenna option that can resonate on both 10 meters and 2 meters.
When studying for General, the ARRL general study guide taught that
antennas are resonant on frequencies with odd multiples. (2m antennas work
on 70cm because their wavelengths are an odd 3:1 multiple) TO all of you
more experienced hams, Is this principle pretty universal or is it an oversimplification? Wouldnt a 10 meter mobile antenna resonate on 2 meters, since its also an odd multiple of 5:1? Ive never seen a 10 meter antenna advertised as being able to multiband on 2m but according to that rule, shouldnt it work? Or are mobile 10 meter antennas using their own
specialized ratio that doesnt resonate on 2 meters? If anyone has tried
this please let me know, and I can save myself $500 for now by getting a 10 meter antenna instead submitted by /u/CMDR_Smooticus

Yaesu FTM300 Data Cable DIY

Im trying to make a data cable that runs from my Yaesu FTM 300 to my PC.
Trying to make a DIY version of the CT-165 (discontinued I think, or
extremely hard to find). 9 pin Yaesu din to RS 232. I have the parts
already. Does anybody have a CT-165 cable that they can measure the pinout,
or help me line up the existing wires?
Some wires are 1:1 (like RTS, CTS, GND, TXD, RXD) but I am not sure about
the PSK/PTT, packet outputs, and SQL.
Images of the pinout below.
Cable is mainly going to be used for APRS display when hooked to PC.

hello.
i have a little home station catching RF on 2m for APRS with the PinPoint program. since the computer has internet i am uploading what its hearing to aprs.fi for the network. in the past i couldnt hear any transmission, so i
used to drive around with my cellphone and HT to send my own packet to my receiving station.
its been a while since i did my setup. i just plugged it back and i am surprised to see i can hear alot of packets (about 1 per 30sec). i want to
see online what my home station is uploading to the network. i am searching
on the website, but i cant find the button. the program is saying that it received X message and that its uploading it to Y server. i just want to
see it online in order to make sure its working right.

Lightning arrestor for non-coax feed lines

The lightning arrestors I see on DX Engineering and Gigaparts are for coax feedlines. Im feeding antennas through an MFJ window feed-thru panel, so
theres no coax outside.
Right now I run up a random wire, and just take it down when its not in
use. But Id like to experiment with a more permanent setup, and possibly a twin-lead fed doublet. What does the lightning arrestor setup look like for that, when the only coax is from transmitter to tuner, and its just wires
from then on?
In case it matters, I can do a ground rod bonded with my service entrance connected to the ground lug on my feedthru panel. submitted by

Dealing with a stump where I want to set an antenna mast

Ive got one spot the wife will let me put an antenna mast. Guy wires are
out of the question, so its at the back corner of my house, where I could
set it in concrete and affix a support to the house near the roof line (split-level home, so nearly 2-stories). This would get me high enough
above the roof line to deploy a ground plane vertical.
The problem is there was a good sized bush in that very spot. I cut it down near ground level last year, but the stump remains (two or three smaller trunks, together perhaps 8" across in total). Even if I rented a stump
grinder I couldnt really take it much below ground level, and theres a root system with which I would need to contend as well. Are there augurs that
can dig through roots? Im a little lost on what my options might be, here.
The stump is pretty close to the house, so I may be able to set the pad
just outside it, as the mast would need to be far enough from the house to clear the gable overhang (about 12"), but there would still be the root
system in the mix.

I want to install an antenna on the gable of my home. I’d like to avoid
roof installation due to high winds, warranty, damage, etc. The gables on
my home are clipped, or jerkinhead, style. Any recommendations for working
with this style of gable? All the mounts I see are for standard pointy
