    Stickied thread idea...

    Posted: 20 Jun 2022 01:34 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vgv3r3/stickied_thread_idea/

It seems like one of the most popular questions posed by newcomers might be better as a part of the sidebar, or some such similar reference.
That question is usually from someone who is thinking of getting licensed because they want to be able to use an ht in the event of an emergency to
talk to family/loved ones who are more than a few miles away. Usually 50+
    to hundreds of miles away.
This same topic keeps coming up, seemingly daily, and I am impressed by the consistency and courtesy of the replies. Some of the frequent respondents
might be using a bit of copy-and-paste at this point.
Im usually too busy with other responsibilities to chime in on this
recurring topic, and I imagine that there are some here who might be
    getting tired of it, too..
I am interested in your thoughts on this, including from the moderators. Thanks! submitted by /u/VisualEyez33

How do I hook up an XLR mic to my ICOM 7100?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2022 02:44 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vgwpcr/how_do_i_hook_up_an_xlr_mic_to_my_icom_7100/

I have an ICOM 7100 which uses an 8 pin connector (looks like an ethernet cable)
I also have a microphone with an XLR connector on the back which Id like to
use to replace the stock 7100 mic.
I found this connector online https://www.ebay.com/itm/174202267123?mkevt=1&mkpid=0&emsid=e11050.m43.l1123&mkcid=26&ch=osgood&euid=6a81c86ce0a4490595c739e58096cedb&bu=45152771104&osub=-1%7E1&crd=20220620073009&segname=11050
Assuming the pins on the XLR match those on the RJ-45 style mic connector
for the radio, this should be all good. My question is, would this work,
and if so, how would I use PTT with this setup? Is there another adapter
out there for this type of microphone connector? Should I just try to build
    my own? submitted by /u/No_Cryptographer9841

Whats a good radio for a beginner?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2022 02:25 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vgw9x2/whats_a_good_radio_for_a_beginner/

I’m looking for something not too expensive, but also not low quality. I’m also wondering what licenses should I get and how should I study/do them. I live in the United States.
Edit: I would prefer to be able to talk. submitted by

List of San Antonio repeaters - one-stop shopping if possible

    Posted: 20 Jun 2022 02:21 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vgw6i3/list_of_san_antonio_repeaters_onestop_shopping_if/

I know of repeaterbook.com and have DuckDuckd for additional sites. Is
there an accurate and current single-source list of SA repeaters? Got a new
rig Id like to program. 73

EDIT: Thanks for the replies but, having read in more than one spot that repeaterbook is not "all that" .. thats why I ask. Feedback noted.

    External sound card with FTDX10?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2022 02:13 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vgw06v/external_sound_card_with_ftdx10/

I have been using FT8 lately, and learned that I cant play music on my PC because it will transmit along with everything else. Unfortunately, I only
have one sound card, and theres no slot for another. Thinking an external
USB one might work, but then do I still need to use the USB out from the
rig for cat control? Not exactly sure how to go about doing this.

    New ham here. Help! KI5VUH

    Posted: 20 Jun 2022 12:54 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vgu7gt/new_ham_here_help_ki5vuh/

I bought a TYT TH-7800 from RL Electronics and I have the software program
that I downloaded from MTC for that radio. I dont know where to start programming on it. Like where I start and what needs to be checked, where
do I enter the frequencies for repeaters, whether the radio needs to be on
or off, and dont understand some of the jargon. At first just trying to
program my local repeaters and once I get them in and understand then I
will program simplex. Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/sdmay1980
