What do people talk about at in-person club meetings? Also, lady operators,
how comfortable are you in the community?

    Posted: 20 Jul 2022 12:22 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w3g3n0/what_do_people_talk_about_at_inperson_club/

Hi everyone! Im currently studying to write my basic exam (Canada) and a
lot of the resources Ive read keep reiterating the importance of connecting with a local amateur radio club. There is one in my community and they hold weekly meet-ups. Im just genuinely curious if anyone can tell me what
people do at these weekly meet-ups.
I know this is a strange question but I have some social anxiety so the
idea of going alone to a community meetup with a group of strange, older
men makes me a little nervous (I say men from looking at the groups recent Facebook photos). Especially since I dont feel qualified to be in their
club. I know most operators are super friendly but Id love to hear some feedback from women in the radio community. submitted by /u/Phlutteringphalanges

    Packet radio terminal for MacOS?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2022 10:18 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w3e0eh/packet_radio_terminal_for_macos/

The bug’s been biting me to get on AX.25 packet both locally with VHF and
to scope out the 105 network.
Ideally I’d like to put a DigiPi together for dedicated use, but since Raspberry Pis are difficult to find at the moment, I though I’d try to get something running on my Mac.
I think I’ve got direwolf running successfully on the Mac, but now I’m struggling to find a packet terminal that’ll interface with direwolf. Is anyone aware of one? (I guess PBBS support would be cool, but primarily
just looking for something that’ll let me connect to area stations and chat or leave messages on BBSes). I’m seeing a handful of APRS applications that’ll interface with direwolf on the Mac, but not much for plain AX.25. Another thought would be to run a Linux VM and share the audio interface,
then run direwolf and something like LinPac there. Curious if anyone’s
tried something along these lines and has any suggestions? submitted by /u/coham

    Antenna Analyzer VS Antenna Tuner

    Posted: 19 Jul 2022 09:23 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w3czl8/antenna_analyzer_vs_antenna_tuner/

I am worried about SWR on a 40m homebrew wire dipole I plan to make. Should
I buy an antenna analyzer and make adjustments to the actual antenna OR purchase an antenna tuner and use that to fix whatever imperfections the antenna has?
Related to the antenna analyzer, would this be a good choice? Other ones
    are really expensive. https://www.amazon.com/AURSINC-NanoVNA-H-Vector-Network-Analyzer/dp/B07Z5VY7B6/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=antenna+analyzer&qid=1658289659&sr=8-3

40 meter versus 20 meter etiquette

    Posted: 19 Jul 2022 09:56 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w3dm89/40_meter_versus_20_meter_etiquette/

Im a fairly new ham with a question about 20m versus 40m behavior. I
usually haunt 20 meters, where people call CQ and others answer. It gives
lots of opportunities to start a new contact. But when I venture into 40 meters, I rarely hear anybody calling CQ, and its rare to even hear anybody
ID with their callsign. Instead of typical "contact" discussions about
signal reports, radio gear, and callsigns, I mostly hear extended ragchews between people who already know each other, and that never seem to end. Ive tried calling CQ myself, but Im usually unsuccessful getting any responses.
So how does a new ham make contacts on 40m? Ive heard other people just
break into the middle of someones ragchew - is that the 40m way?

    Hi r/amateurradio,
I would like to be able to control my radio from another room of my house.
What I would like is a way to control the computer attached to my radio
from another room. There are a number of remote desktop options out there
but Im wondering if anyone here has experience with sending the audio
    through a remote desktop connection.
Information about my setup: Main station: Windows 11 desktop and usb connected Yaesu FT-991A Remote machine: Windows 11 laptop

Most common digimodes on WARC bands?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2022 01:30 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w32orr/most_common_digimodes_on_warc_bands/

So obviously theres a bit of activity on 20 and 40 meters for digital modes other than the WSJT modes, such as psk, Olivia, etc. Ive tried working the
WARC bands for any mode outside of ft8, but Ive yet to hear anything else.
Have any of you had luck on these bands with psk, Olivia, or any other
    digital mode?
Now that were getting more solar activity, I imagine it would be
interesting to see those bands being utilized. submitted by /u/douglasdouglasj

    Antenna Connection to Forty-9er

    Posted: 19 Jul 2022 04:06 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w36d14/antenna_connection_to_forty9er/

Ive completed construction of the Forty-9er kit (for those who are
interested: Project: Sainsmart Forty-9er “3W” 7.023Mhz QRP CW Transceiver Kit | Goughs Tech Zone (goughlui.com) ). However, Its unclear to me how I should be taking the two, tiny, little wires I have for the antenna & get
them connected to a 40 meter antenna. Can you just shove (and solder of
course) those two bits of nothing to a PL259 or are there additional steps, adapters, something?
All the testing shows that the radio is working. I just need to get it on
an antenna so I can do more complete tests. submitted by /u/ScaryDBA

Has anyone tried migrating their FRN over to the new FCC CORES system? I
didnt have any issues creating the new email/username-based account and associating my FRN. However, I cant seem to do much else. What is the

Which should we install - IRLP or Echolink

    Posted: 19 Jul 2022 12:35 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w31bxx/which_should_we_install_irlp_or_echolink/

We have revived a 440 repeater which had IRLP, although the computer on
which IRLP was installed has died. Our 2M repeater runs Allstar; so for
this one, which one would be the most useful and used - IRLP or Echolink?
It bothers me that both of these packages seem outdated and working with
them would be like restoring an Atari 2600. And if nobody uses either one,
then its not worth it. Opinions? Tnx de K0GUZ submitted by /u/scarter435
