What is it with these radios and acting like it is 1995

    Posted: 21 Jul 2022 01:15 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w4qjp1/what_is_it_with_these_radios_and_acting_like_it/

As a 25-year-old know it all, I must ask. Why are 90% of the radios on the market antiquated in their programming and memory?
I have been building a DMR codeplug for a few weeks now. The thing I cannot
get past is why in 2022 I bought a $350 device that can only hold 300,000 contacts? I checked the file size; it is a whopping 11MB for 220,000
    contacts.
    I can buy a 64gb sd card for $15.
Then there is serial programming. God it is slow, like 10 minutes to write
    that 11MB file.
I am just wondering, am I missing something? Like is there a reason that
the memory and programming is strait out of the 90s? submitted by /u/Saltyigloo

    Hello everyone!
As the title says, I´m building a DXC starting from a pole that I bought
from Callum long ago. I don´t have the plates but I can make them with my tools. The thing is, could somebody help me with the dimensions of the plates/discs? I think they are about 17cm of diameter and the one with the radials is about 14cms. Am I wrong? Are these dimension critic for its performance? I thank you in advance for any help about this.

    Installing 2m/440 Antenna at Home

    Posted: 21 Jul 2022 11:10 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w4nhh1/installing_2m440_antenna_at_home/

Im trying to figure out a good way to install a 2m/440 antenna at home. I
have a deck with a wooden shade structure ~8 above it held up by 6x6 posts.
I have a diamond X30 right now but would probably be getting an X50 for the additional gain. Nothing large or with a big wind-load though.
Im wondering if this sounds like a good way to go about it, or if any of
you have other suggestions? I cut 2 short pieces of unistrut to secure the
6x6 post with lag bolts Use them to secure a section of metal pipe that extends up as high as is reasonable Im looking for suggestions here as to
what pipe to use. Ive seen people use sections of metal fence post that
comes in various lengths. Id like to get this 5-10 above the top of the covering ideally with a single pole submitted by /u/wholemilklatte

What is the legality of running APRS on the VHF Business Band?

We all know that amateur radio cannot be used for business purposes. Can
one legally use some ham radio tech on the business band though for
business purposes. For example, if a business has a VHF Business Band
license, could they use APRS on their allocated frequency for asset
tracking? The emission will still be FM so I cant think of issues. Anybody
    know better? submitted by /u/Jefferson-not-jackso

ARRL renewal requires login. Cant login without an active membership. No
way for me to renew without calling on the phone during their operating
hours. Ill pass and spend my money on radio gear instead. We need a amateur radio organization that is built for the modern era.

My (indoor) 15m dipole is 182 inches long!

    Posted: 21 Jul 2022 05:19 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w4w8jf/my_indoor_15m_dipole_is_182_inches_long/

I just wanted to share some of the weirdness in my life. Ive had this
antenna up for many decades, but havent operated on it since the 1999. Last
QSO was with a Japanese station. On 10 meters.
Why did I say it was a 15 meter dipole? Well, it was one when I started
out, and made many contacts on 15. And it stuck in my mind. Apparently I trimmed it down for ten when I bought a Radio Shack ten meter box. And over
the decades forgot that it wasnt a 15 meter antenna any more.
But why was it cut to 182 inches? Apparently, again, that was the lowest
SWR with my cheapo Olson Radio SWR meter. My new MFJ Antenna Analyzer says
that it is lowest SWR at 30.5 (or so) MHz.
Just wanted to share, thanks for reading! submitted by /u/squeakyc

    EFHW counterpoise

    Posted: 21 Jul 2022 11:56 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w4omho/efhw_counterpoise/

I am hoping someone can help clarify some questions about 80-10 EFHW
    antenna.
I see people mounting the unun low to the ground and running a sloper. What
is the point of mounting low to the ground other than to keep the coax
    short?
I know the antenna does not require a counterpoise, but if one is not
attached it uses the coax as a counterpoise? If this is not correct please explain. (gimme the for dummies version).
If you do not supply a counterpoise should you ground the coax shield? Why
    or why not?
How does attaching a counterpoise to the unun vs a ground wire differ?
I was planning on mounting the unun at about 20 feet and hitting a tree at
70 or 80 foot with a ground or counterpoise but it was suggested I mount
the unun low and not ground or use a counterpoise and I am now confused.
    Lol.
Thank you in advance for answering!!
