THE SARL HF DIGITAL CONTEST THIS AFTERNOON

The SARL HF Digital Contest will be on the air from 14:00 to 17:00 UTC thi
s afternoon, with RTTY activity spread over three periods: 20 m between
    14:00 and 14:30 UTC, 40 m between 15:00 and 16:00 UTC and 80 m between
16:30 and 17:00 UTC. You have a choice of four categories of participatio
    n. YL and Youth participants are asked to mark their log sheets with YL or
Youth. All the information is on page 62 of the 2022 SARL Contest Manual.

    MFJ TO CELEBRATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY

MFJ Enterprises, an amateur radio electronics manufacturer and retailer
, will celebrate 50 years in business this October. Martin Jue, K5FLU
, founded the company in 1972 after building a CW filter kit that sold f
or less than $10. Since 1990 the company has made five acquisitions, inc
luding Hy-Gain and Cushcraft antennas. MFJ Customer Services and Public Re lations Manager Richard Stubbs says the company continues to grow with the
popularity of amateur radio and currently manufactures over 2 000 product
    s. "I've been with the company for 28 years and the number
s are good," said Stubbs. "Amateur radio continues to gr
    ow worldwide."

Martin Jue graduated from Mississippi State University with a bachelorâ
-(tm)s degree in electrical engineering and he earned a master's
degree in electrical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology ( Georgia Tech). He served as a professor of electrical engineering at Missi ssippi State University from 1972 until 1979, but abandoned his doctorat
    e in 1977 because of MFJ's growth.

THE 25TH INTERNATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE AND LIGHTSHIP WEEKEND

At the time of writing this bulletin, seventeen South African lighthouse
s have registered for the 25th ILLW activity on 20 and 21 August. The Cape
Town Amateur Radio Centre will activate Green Point lighthouse for the 24
th time! With one week to go, there is still time to register a lighthou
se. Hopefully, Namibia and Mozambique will also appear on the list. ILLW
is one of the most popular international amateur radio events in existenc
e, probably because there are very few rules and it is not the usual con test-type event. It is also free and there are no prizes for contacting la
rge numbers of other stations. ILLW is not a contest!

The 2022 Southern African Lighthouse Award is available for working lighth ouses in Namibia, South Africa and Mozambique. Find the 2022 Lighthouse
log sheet at . You may contact non-lighthouse stations, BUT there must
be at least FOUR lighthouses in your log to qualify for the certificate.
The Lighthouse name, number and the operator's name must be obt
ained during the QSO. The certificate will be sent to you by e-mail - it i
s a PDF document. Send your log sheet to secretary@sarl.org.za after the e vent.

You are listening to a news bulletin of the South African Radio League.

    RTTY TURNS 100

On 9 August 1922 a text was typed in an airplane and simultaneously printe
d out at a ground station. With this experiment, the US Navy Department
gave the telex procedure wings - exactly 100 years ago. From now on, it
was possible to transmit texts wirelessly at a speed of up to 100 words p
er minute. The Ministry immediately pushed for messages to be made availab
le in the opposite direction, namely from the ground to the plane. It wa
s the birth of radio telex or RTTY.

After the Second World War, the first telexes came into the hands of rad
io amateurs in the USA, who then modified their transmitters for frequen
cy shift keying (FSK). RTTY had now also arrived in the amateur radio serv
ice. With the advent of personal computers at the beginning of the 1980s
, they replaced the previously widespread electro mechanically generated
RTTY with very simple RTTY programmes. With the introduction of digital t echnology and the development of new types of transmission such as PSK31 a
nd later FT8, RTTY has lost its previous importance in amateur radio. It
is different in the maritime radio service: despite modern and fast digit
al processes, RTTY transmissions still have their place there, e.g.,
to warn of dangers or to transmit current sea weather reports to the skip pers.

    CLUB NEWS

The West Rand Amateur Radio Club would like to remind you they will activa
te Seal Point Lighthouse, ILLW number ZA-0021, situated in Cape St Fra

the 20, 40 and 80 metres. All QSOs will be confirmed via the SA QSL Ser
vice, QRZ.com and a special QSL card sent via the SARL QSL Bureau. ZS6WR
/2 Lighthouse would love to make a contact with you during this special ev
ent. Please turn on your radio, contact as many Lighthouses as possible
and claim your Lighthouse certificate. Remember - the bands are only dead

The Boland Amateur Radio Club will put 2 stations on the air this coming w eekend during the International Lighthouse Weekend. On l'Agulhas, BARK w
ill be using the call sign ZS1BAK/L from the southernmost lighthouse on th
e African continent. From Cape Columbine, Boland members will also put t
he call sign ZS1BK/L on the air. Amateurs are requested to listen out for
    the 2 stations on 80, 40 and 20 m. ZS1BK will also be active on 160,
15 and 10 metres. QSL via the electronic SA-QSL system will be replied to
    .

The next Sandton ARC Power Hour will take place from 18:45 CAT on Thursday
25 August on the 145,700 repeater and Echolink on ZS6STN-R. The guest i
s Mike, ZS6MSW and he will be talking about the 7P8CW DXpedition schedul
    ed for November.

The Sasolburg Amateur Radio Club held its AGM on Saturday 6 August. A new
committee was elected and Louis Haarhoff, ZS6BD, was elected as the C
hairman for the coming year. Louis thanked the Club members for their trus
t in him and he also thanked the outgoing committee for their work during
the past year. The Club has seen an average growth of 10% in member numbe
rs over the last couple of years and this is because the Club excels in mo
st areas of Amateur Radio. Listen for the ZS4SRK call sign, The Club wou
ld love a QSO with you.

MFJ OM 50-JAAR HERDENKING TE VIER

MFJ Enterprises, 'n amateur radio elektroniese vervaardiger en kleinhand
elaar, sal hierdie Oktober 50 jaar in besigheid vier. Martin Jue, K5FL
vervaardig tans meer as 2 000 produkte.

us. Die Kaapstadse Amateurradiosentrum gaan Groenpunt-vuurtoring vir die 2
4ste keer aktiveer!
ILLW is nie

    2 Vuurtoring-logstaat by www.sarl.org.za/public/contests/contestrules.asp.

    RTD WORD 100

at boodskappe in die teenoorgestelde rigting beskikbaar gestel word, naa
mlik van die grond na die vliegtuig. Dit was die geboorte van radio-teleks
    of RTD.

net dood as jou radio af is!

    SO met jou wil hê.

    KOMPETISIE NUUS

gaan wees. Tans is daar 5 sonvlekke met eenvoudige magnetiese samestellin
gs sigbaar.
