It is with sadness that we announce that the key of Jan Bosman ZS6BHC went
silent on 25 September 2022 at the age of 94. Jan was a member of the the
n Northern Transvaal Branch, then OTL Branch and was well known amongst
the then â-˜Daybreak' team.
We extend our sincere condolences to Pieter ZS3AOR, his daughter Non,
grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends.

The second leg of the AWA SSB Valve QSO Party is on the air from 13:00 UTC
to 17:00 UTC this afternoon with participants using preferably, valve r
adios or radios with valves in them. No linear amplifiers may be used. The
QSO Party is run on 40 and 80 metres, with 7,100 kHz to 7,130 kHz b
eing contest free. The exchange is a RS report, your call sign, a cons
ecutive serial number starting at 001 and the type of radio used. Submit y

THE SARL 80 M QSO PARTY ON 6 OCTOBER
The second leg of the SARL 80 m QSO Party runs from 17:00 UTC to 19:00 UTC
on Thursday 6 October 2022. The segment 3 651 kHz to 3 700 kHz is contest
free. The exchange is a RS report and your name and call sign. You score
10 points for a QSO with a South African station and 15 points for a stat

THE SPRING QRP CONTEST ON 8 OCTOBER
The West Rand Amateur Radio Club would like to remind you that the final l
eg of the SARL QRP Contest will take place on Saturday 8th October 2022. M
ake contacts with 5 watts or less power on the 40 m band between 12:00 UTC
- 12:45 UTC. From 12:45 UTC to 13:30 UTC you are welcome to use 160, 80
, 20, 15 and 10 m. Extra points are awarded for field stations and hom
ebrew rigs. Please be sure to submit a photo of your field station and/or
homebrew rig to claim your extra points. Ideally the photo should include
the radio and the operator - amateur radio in action!
WHERE TO LOOK FOR BACAR 10 SIGNALS ON 8 OCTOBER
The Balloon Carrying Amateur Radio or BACAR is planned to launch at 07:00
CAT on Saturday 8 October from the model aircraft airfield at Trichardt n
ear Secunda. Attached to the balloon will be ten different payloads includ
ing AfriCUBE's linear transponder, APRS, a new flight transponder, G
igacube with a 10 GHz up and downlink, a 40 m SSTV transmission as well
as four Lora payloads. The AfriCUBE linear transponder will also be opera tional and to facilitate communication has been broken up into a few 'chan nels.' Please log all contacts with BACAR 10 and include the grid locator

You can be part of the event - bring your caravan or tent and come and cam
p at the Trichardt Dam Yacht Club on 8 October 2022. There is an element o
f 'roughing it' with lots of space for your tent and even space for a cara

and 220 V to charge your radio. Braai facilities are available but bring
your own wood or charcoal. The cost is R40 per person per night, but yo

The October 2022 issue of Radio ZS is available for download from the Leag

Thirteen logs were received for the second leg of the SARL Regional FT4 co ntest held on Saturday 10 September. The logs show that 473 QSOs were made
during the contest.

nd on 70 cm it was 371 km.

PROPAGATION REPORT
Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at low to moderate levels. There are currently four sunspots visible w
ith simple to slightly complex magnetic configurations. There is a high pr obability for C-class and a moderate probability for M-class flaring. If y
ou want to do your own frequency predictions, the expected effective sun
spot number for the week will be around 92. The 10 m to 30 m bands will es pecially, in the late afternoon, provide some good DX fun. Please visi
