    and

A CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR SARL AWARDS AND TROPHIES

Stay tuned for more information on these and other interesting news items.

We begin this bulletin with news of a silent key.

It is with deep regret that we announce that the key of Jimmy Struthers,
ZS6OX went silent in the early hours of 1 January 2023. He would have tur
ned 95 on 15 January 2023. He had been a member of the Highveld Amateur Ra
dio Club since 1970 and was only able to operate on VHF having moved into
a retirement village about 20 years ago. We extend our sincere condolence
s to his sons, Greg and Keith, their families, and friends.

    AN APOLOGY

Dennis, ZS2B apologises that there was no news bulletin for Sunday 1 Jan
uary 2023. Dennis is on holiday at the mouth of the Great Fish River and s
ince the beginning of October 2022, there have been no MTN or Vodacom si
gnals at the cottages. To get a signal, Dennis must drive along the R72
until he finds a signal strong enough to download and upload e-mails. Thi
s bulletin is being written at a picnic bench at the lagoon at Kleinemonde
, 12 km from the mouth of the Great Fish River!

    THE SARL 100 PROJECT

The SARL 100 project is progressing very well. From the smallest newspaper
clipping to the handwritten notes of amateurs from the early 1900s. It is
amazing what has been preserved, donated, or made available to the pr
oject so far. An enormous amount of interesting information about the earl
y history of Amateur Radio in South Africa has already been discovered,
such as the application and approval of the first badge of the SARL which
differs from the current badge, as well as the application and approval
of the name South African Radio League in the Government Gazette and we k
    eep finding more.

Since so much information had already been gathered, the author started
compiling and editing the first chapters of the book from the beginning o
f Wireless Telegraphy in South Africa to the beginning of the Second World
War, a period of over 40 years, where among other achievements the fo
undation for broadcasting in South Africa was also laid by the amateur rad
    io pioneers.

Several amateurs may think that they have made no contributions to Amateur
Radio in South Africa, while practically every single amateur has made
some contribution over the years. It is important that you tell your stor
y so that it can be recorded as part of the history of Amateur Radio in So
    uth Africa.

In the next few weeks, Anette, ZR6D will travel to Cape Town and come
back via the Garden Route and Port Elizabeth to visit some of our senior
amateurs to record their stories and collect memorabilia they want to don
ate to the project. Where the items are valuable and or cannot be donated
, they will be photographed to have a record of the items. If you think
you have something to contribute, no matter how small, please conside
r getting in touch with Anette so she can determine the best way to get th
e information from you. Your contribution is important to the project. We
need to get it sooner rather than later. Now is the time to get it done.
Anette can be contacted on 073 1999 032 or by e-mail at archives@sarl.org
    .za (mailto:archives@sarl.org.za) .

    PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that solar activity is expected to be
at low to moderate levels. There are currently six sunspot regions with s imple to slightly complex magnetic configurations visible. There is a high
probability for C-class, and a moderate probability for M-class flaring
. If you want to do your own frequency predictions, the expected effecti
ve sunspot number for the week will be around 99. The 10 to 30 m bands wil
l provide some good DX fun. For more information, please visit the websi

Hy was sedert 19

ndag 1 Januarie 2023 was nie.

r kry. Anette kan by 073 1999 032
    gekontak word of per e-pos by archives@sarl.org.za (mailto:archives@sarl. org.za) .

ig is.
l vir die tyd en reis sowel as verblyf by die Pig and Whistle in Bathurst
betaal.
    aart weer oprig. Kontak Hugh by hugh@eclipselogistics.co.za (mailto:hugh@e clipselogistics.co.za) of selfoon 082 777 5141.
