THE SARL HAMNET 40 M CONTEST THIS AFTERNOON
The SARL HAMNET 40 m Simulated Emergency Contest is on the air from 12:00
to 14:00 UTC this afternoon with phone activity in the band segments 7 06
3 to 7 100 kHz and 7 130 to 7 200 kHz. There are four categories of partic ipation, and the exchange and scoring are determined by the category. Su

THE MARCH 2023 RADIO ZS
The March 2023 issue if Radio ZS is available for download from the League
web site. We look at the Region 1 "Shaping the Future" pr

d a special theme for World Amateur Radio Day 2023. ZS SOTA celebrates 20

2023 AGM BOOKLET AVAILABLE
The 2023 AGM Booklet is available for download from the League web site,
click on the link to get your copy. The document contains the minutes of
the 2022 AGM, the Unaudited Accounts for the period ending 31 January 2
023, the Proposed Budget for 2023/2024, the proposed membership fees f
or 2023/2024 and three motions from Council.

CONTEST NEWS
There was an error in the dates for the Mega CW QRS Week as published in S
ARL News last Sunday. The activity runs from Friday 3 March to Thursday 9
March with activity from 15:30 to 16:30 UTC each day. The exchange is a R
ST report and your name. Nothing more!
The SARL Field Day and the RSGB Commonwealth Contest is on the air on Satu
rday 11 and Sunday 12 March. The SARL Field Day runs from 08:00 UTC on Sat urday until 10:00 UTC on Sunday with phone and CW activity on 160, 80,
40, 20, 15 and 10 metres. Turn to page 64 of the 2023 Blue Book for t
he rules.
The RSGB Commonwealth contest runs from 10:00 UTC on Saturday to 10:00 UTC
on Sunday with CW activity on 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 metres. The exc
hange is an RST report plus an incrementing serial number starting at 1. G

The SARL VHF/UHF Analogue contest and the Africa All Mode DX contest will
be run over the weekend of 18 and 19 March.

CLUB NEWS
Calling all Clubs and interest groups! The West Rand Club challenges you t
o the first leg of Field Day 2023. Be creative and set up a field station
and get on the air. As one of the 2023 premium SARL contests, Field Day
always holds a surprise or more, a real fun day out and friendships to
be made all around. Set up a Club field station and get Club members to a ssist, join the fun from solar power to having a cooking contest on the
side. Why not slingshot the long wire antenna to add some excitement and
flavour? Call a park picnic or camp the weekend away, hike up the kopje
and ask the Club novices to join in by setting up antennas and assisting
with logging.
With several categories in which to enter and the inclusion of regional en tries in the score sheet, it will be fun all around and finding your Clu
b's novelty or strong points will rake in the points. SOTA and POTA teams
get the most points with a portable or ultra-light station and extra mult ipliers. Make a day of it and see a new place and hear new voices on the a
ir.
The West Rand Club plans to set up camp as always and will have ONLY femal
e operators on air. Switch your radio on and support our Mermaid ladies ca lling CQ Field Day 2023 with their hint of magic-modulated voices. See you

It is March, which means the SARL National Field Day weekend on 11 and 1
2 March is just a few days away. The Sandton Amateur Radio Club, ZS6STN
, will be in the field over the contest weekend and we certainly would l
ike to make at least one contact with every Amateur and Club across the co untry during the weekend.
This is one of the few opportunities to get the unique ZS6STN callsign in
to your 2023 Logbook, so please switch on your radio, scan the bands
and find ZS6STN .... as ZS6STN is really, really, looking forward to
having a QSO with you. Let us enjoy National Field Day together -
Keith, ZS6HI for Team ZS6STN.
PROPAGATION REPORT
Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at low to moderate levels. There are currently nine sunspots with simp
le to complex magnetic configurations visible. The probability for C-class
solar flares is high, and moderate for M-class solar flares.
If you want to do your own frequency predictions, the expected effective
sunspot number for the week will be around 117. The 10 to 30 m bands may
, especially in the early mornings and late afternoons, provide some g

Ons roep alle klubs en belangegroepe! Die Wesrand-klub daag jou uit om dee
l te neem aan die eerste been van Velddag 2023. Wees kreatief en rig 'n ve ldstasie op en klim op die lug. As een van die 2023 primêre SARL-kom petisies, hou Velddag altyd 'n verrassing of meer in, 'n ware pret dag
met vriendskappe wat oral gemaak word. Stel 'n Klub-veldstasie op en kry
Klublede om te help, sluit aan by die pret van sonkrag tot 'n kook komp
etisie langs die kant. Waarom nie die langdraad antenna in -n boom
slinger om 'n bietjie opwinding en geur by te voeg nie? Reël 'n piek
niek in die park of kamp die naweek uit, stap teen die koppie op en vra
die Klub-beginners om aan te sluit deur antennas op te stel en te help me
t die log staat.
Met verskeie kategorieë om in te skryf en die insluiting van streek i nskrywings by die logstaat, sal dit pret wees om jou Klub se nuutheid o
f sterk punte te vind en sal punte insamel. SOTA- en POTA-spanne kry die
meeste punte met 'n draagbare of ultra-ligte stasie en ekstra vermenigvul digers. Maak 'n dag daarvan en sien 'n nuwe plek en hoor nuwe stemme op di
e lug.
Die Wesrand Klub beplan om kamp op te slaan soos altyd en sal SLEGS vrouli

Dit is Maart, wat beteken die SARL Nasionale Velddag-naweek op 11 en 12
Maart is net 'n paar dae weg. Die Sandton Amateurradioklub, ZS6STN, s

een kontak maak met elke Amateur en Klub regoor die land gedurende die na week.

rwagte effektiewe sonvlektelling van 117 vir die week gebruik. Radio amate
