Very nice clip.
Gonzalez's BH is terrible. No defensive skills, no passes, no return,
only a punched sliceish sort of thing. He had Hoad on the ropes in one
game, but the BH failed him where a TS drive would have been a sure
thing. But if you can't hit one, that's it. It's amazing how much tennis strokes have changed.
Considering all their shortcomings, these guys are very good players/athletes. Surprisingly good. A good crowd too. A Dimitrov with a woodie would would trounce these guys, though.

First, what in the hell do you think about the surface? Shiny! I had
played in a little tournament back in the 70s at the college courts and
they were due to be resurfaced the next year. They were incredibly fast. Everything stayed low and ran back at you real fast. It *looked* like that.
No benches, huh? No wussed out concessions to the poor, tired players.
Serve technique has evolved a lot. Gonzales was a bit more conventional,
but neither player did much of a knee bend--to a degree, Hoad seemed to torque around his left foot.
Finally, there was something of Federer's grace in Gonzales' movement.
Great treat!!!
They had special serve rules because Gonzales was so dominant, eg he had
to stand 3 feet beyond baseline when serving in some tournaments to give receiver more time, and wasn't allowed to jump ie couldn't have both
feet off ground at contact. He still dominated on serve.

Yes, and this was years past his best. In this match he actually came
out of retirement to earn more money for his tennis resorts.
Man imagine if we could have matches involving peak Hoad, Laver,
Pancho, McEnroe on grass with wood rackets. Couldn't get any better.

You can never rule that out. But Gonzalez made hash out of a BH on BP.
My cat armed with a modern TS BH drive would of killed the ball and broken.
Meow.
