Say whatever you want about Gilbert but he's 100% a good tennis analyst. That's what kept him in the top ten for so long.

Gilbert wouldn't be good for all players, eg be useless for Djokovic.
Novak benefits from specific skills coach for areas he wants to improve/shorten points, like Goran who lived on his serve.
Gilbert can help talented players who are underperforming for no obvious reason,
like Agassi, Gauff, Sinner etc

Agreed.
To some significant degree,
pro coaches are "gurus", svengalis. Most
players who have "arrived" have solid mechanics, with only fine-tuning needed, or a specialty re-work, like service motion.
But I think that Gilbert is guru more than mechanics coach.

It was? Was Connors a coach?
He coached Sharapova for 1 day. She couldn't take it anymore and sacked
him. People look at Jimmy and think they could learn a lot from his
street fighter qualities, but the problem is that's what he's like off
court too, what you see is what you get.

You can tell he'd have no patience for players who want to be moody, indulge in angst, or push back against his approach. Nor is he the type to hold their hand and soft-soap them just because they are >paying him. Sharapova seems like a control freak

He admits he doesn't have any. That's why he looked on enviously at
eg Agassi thinking how much he could win with that talent. He watched Agassi lose winnable matches and knew exactly what he'd do on critical
points if he had that talent, whereas Agassi had no clue about
strategy etc

Yes, but he also has helped him improve his serving. Novak never
focussed much on the serve as he was rock solid from the baseline, so
just getting the ball started. By improving his serve he could shorten
points and take control quickly, big help as he ages. 80% of Goran's strategy was devoted simply to his serve options, smart to employ a
guy like that if you want to acquire a great serve.

Yes, you'd have to be prepared to be cucked because Jimmy will do it
his way, no mollycoddling. Lendl is similar, didn't work with Zverev

That whole set-up Toni has with FAA is absurd. I don't know what FAA is getting out of it. He needs to can Toni.
