Canada dealt with all of its economic problems and finally it's addressing the last straws' problem.

Now people of Canada can afford housing and reasonable food pricing.

Some US states banned plastic straws a few years back. But it didn't stick.

Microplastics in the environment and our bodies is a growing problem
with unforeseen health (and thus economic) consequences down the road.
The proliferation of microplastics is fueled by the gradual breakdown of these larger plastics.  It's no laughing matter, imo.  Plastic bags are banned where I live too, and it's really an improvement.  Paper bags
hold more product in my experience.  And plastic bags always have or
quickly develop holes in them which limit their reusability.

I CANNOT stand those pathetic plastic bags! One is lucky if they haven't
been ripped open by the time you get home...

Who else is going to work in the nursing homes?

    The unemployed?

They said the same thing here (and apparently in every western country)
over a decade ago, when Finland was #2 in the world on doctors/nurses
per capita. Now few hundred thousand immigrants later our health care
system is failing. I guess it didn't help after all. I'd go as far as
say that it made the situation worse.

It's not sustainable solution anyway, these masses of immigrants get old
too. In any case, the baby-boomers will pass away at not that distant
    future.

    Run out of paper straws?

Fortunately we have lots of paper straw manufacturing here.
If greens & EU allow us to cut trees, that is.

Finland may have to pay EU massive money for cutting our trees,
regardless of being most forested nation in Europe with 75% of surface
    being forests.
Also has more primary forests than rest of Europe combined (excluding
    Russia) https://www.kloranebotanical.foundation/sites/default/files/ckeditor/carte%20europe%20forets%20primaires%20%281%29.png

But that doesn't count for anything for EU and its CO2 reduction &
natural preservation goals. 'So your country is all forest, but what are
you going to *DO* about our reforestation goals?'

I don't entirely disagree, I think it's a bad idea to "import" people specifically to work low wage jobs.  But it's also true that advanced nations seem to have a low birth rate, Finland included, and don't have
a huge population to draw from who are willing to work low wage jobs.
In the context of nursing homes, I'd say a contributing factor is
modern, likely childless lazy children who are happy to throw mommy in a cut-rate nursing home to get her off their hands.  They may even hate immigrants(!) but are happy to have them care for their infirm family members. Sound familiar?

No, not familiar at all. I reckon you're not referring to Jill Biden?
