It's not about Democrats or Republicans any more. Trump getting elected never meant people are in love with repubs either. People want a way out of their misery; economic, moral, etc.Anyone that would have run against Harris/Biden would have won.As Sawpartially said, it's very weird times now. There is a big disconnect between politicians, the public, investors, billionaires, etc.

Democrats have become so unpopular that more Americans believe that
aliens are among us than agree with the Democratic Party.
Two punishing new polls released Sunday show that the party has hit
historic new lows in approval ratings nationwide — with just 27% of
Americans saying they like the job Democrats are doing. On other hand
29% Americans believe that aliens are secretly living among us.
It's really strange living here in the US right now. Completely unlike anything I can recall, even the late 60s.
First, I really think that *a lot* of people here, and many who did not
vote for Trump pleased in some way with much of the stuff he has done.
That he has done it unconventionally makes a lot of these same people nervous, but still, people no longer are worried if they use the wrong pronoun to someone because as of Trump, these people who insist on
customized pronouns no longer have a daycare worker to run to and complain.
I think people are worried about the direction of the economy, however.
There is as of now no real impact. The news reports about the markets
seem overblown, and there are a lot of dire, but as yet unfulfilled, predictions of doom, but I'll wait a bit to see if anything substantial emerges.
It's very, very different now.

I think the current times are similar to the late 1960's except for
the amount of jobs in today's economy. The 1960's had social unrest,
so do the 2020's. People are upset with involvement in foreign wars,
similar. Unrest on college campuses and inner cities, similar. People
unwilling to listen and "agree to disagree" with each other...
Personally, I cannot comprehend all the jobs out there! Hell, from the
later 1960's to the early or 2000's, one would crawl across glass on a
parking lot *just* to get an interview! These days even employers like
Toyota are begging people on the radio to apply! Amazing and I can't
understand it. I don't think productivity has necessarily caused this
(although many others have stated as such). Weird times for sure...
It sounds as if you lived thru that era, Scall.
I think that the basic dynamics (deeply divided and oppositional, with
no desire to compromise) are similar, but it was much more violent.
Too, people are now objecting to things *on principal* -- racism when
they are not affected. DEI when they are not affected. But in the 60s/
early 70s it was an *existential* threat. I could be drafted and sent to Vietnam.
Actually when they instituted the lottery ('70 or so?) I was #4. I
failed the physical however.
So I think the *actual* commitment was greater due to the direct threat.
Yes...it was awful, trying to get a job in the early 70s

It has reversed since about 2020. Layoffs and fewer jobs. Still a lot compared to the early 70s,but not like 2019 or so.

True, it sounds like modern day Sawfish on trans issues.
