Population Density
The "waterside" environment, the coastal environment,
exploiting the sea in order to sustain themselves can
support a greater population density. And that means
greater genetic diversity.
I mean, how many people are you going to support by
walking or running after animals that are themselves
built to run?
How many people per square mile?
Whatever figure you want to make up, the waterside
population was larger.
Plain & simple: Exploiting the sea can support more
people than inland hunting-foraging.
Period.
Google it if you want to argue.

Where did they sleep?

Domeshields. They wiped their butts along the edges then
hid underneath to sleep.
