NORMATIVE NATURALISM: nature, specifically human nature, also
establishes what is good. This is the oldest "naturalist" position -- Aristotle has some version of it -- but it continues to be popular now

In the Han Confucian synthesis, then, the proto-scientist's impulse towards categorization and the logician's search for orderly expression joined

The impact of YANG HSIUNG'S PHILOSOPHY on later Chinese thought is undeniable. The historian PAN KU (32-92 CE) revered YANG HSIUNG as one of
the THREE GREAT CONFUCIAN PHILOSOPHERS OF WESTERN HAN, in company with LIU HSIANG and LIU HSIN. PAN KU'S opinion was shared by the leading Eastern Han thinkers, including HUAN T'AN, WANG CH'UNG, CHANG HENG, YING SHAO, and Sung Chung, all of whom appreciated the breadth and critical acumen of YANG HSIUNG'S writings. The Mystery, in fact, continued to greatly influence Chinese thought for a millennium, until prominent SUNG thinkers like SU
HSÜN (1009-1066) and CHU HSI (1130-1200) applied contemporary standards retroactively to YANG HSIUNG, thereby discrediting him on three counts:
(a) his service at the court of the "usurper" WANG MANG (r. 923);
(b) his outright rejection of the theory of human nature proposed by the Confucian master Mencius (c. 371-289); and

well as "opportune time") describes the involuntary and imposed part of

The early Chinese assumed that the transition from primordial chaos to civilized order represented successive stages of increasing
differentiation. In effect, the Chinese argued that the world as they knew

Rain brought many problems for forces in the trenches, particularly in the fall and winter months. Water weakened the structural integrity of the wood by being soaked up and not having a chance to dry. It made the metal rust, eroding it. It also caused mud issues.

Prolonged exposure to moisture and cold air lead to trench foot. Soldiers’ feet got soaked, and the longer their feet were exposed to those
conditions, the more likely they were to get trench foot. At first, their feet turned red due to poor blood supply. Once they began to decay, they produced an odor. As the symptoms developed the feet became swollen with blisters and sores. If untreated it led to gangrene and amputation.
The impact of rain on the trenches was worse at the beginning of the war
than it was at the end. As the war raged on, the design of the trenches changed leading to better drainage, but the weather continued to affect the trenches, especially during the winter months.
Winter in the trench combined the worst of the fall with cold weather.
There was still rain but also below freezing weather and snow.
Frostbite was rampant sometimes leading to amputation. Trenches did not provide any warmth. Everything froze; clothing, blankets, food, etc. It
