“That’s a lot (of travel), even if you don’t have anything to compare it
to,” said Jeff Rainford, chief of staff to Slay from 2001 to 2015.
ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones was out of town on work trips
at least 64 times during her first 42 months in high office, a major
departure from the practices of her predecessors but a strategy she says
is paying dividends for the city.
Calendar documents and travel reports obtained by the Business Journal
through open-records requests show that Jones took 64 trips, many to
government association conferences, through Nov. 14 last year. That meant
she’d been away from the city for all or part of 163 days, or roughly 12%
of her time in office, including weekends, to that point, according to an analysis of the records.
The practice isn’t altogether new given Jones’ past travel record while
city treasurer and her 2021 campaign promise to boost St. Louis as mayor through the network she's built nationally. Jones says that unlike when
she was treasurer, the city has rarely, if ever, footed the bill for her mayoral travel, with Jones or outside organizations paying the tabs. And
she claims the trips – including at least 13 to Washington, D.C. – have
helped St. Louis land hundreds of millions of federal government grant
dollars.
