More than 70 West Point cadets are accused of cheating on an
online math test last May, school officials announced Monday.
The alleged cheating scandal — the Military Academy’s largest in
decades — was uncovered after instructors noticed irregularities
in answers to the calculus test taken remotely due to the
coronavirus pandemic, according to academy spokesman Lt. Col.
Christopher Ophardt.
Of the 73 accused cadets, all but one were freshman. The other
was a sophomore.
An honors committee consisting of trained cadets investigated
the accusations. Following their probe, two cases were dropped
over lack of evidence and four others were tossed because the
accused resigned from West Point, Ophardt said.
Fifty-five cadets admitted to the cheating and enrolled in a six-
month long ethics-focused rehabilitation program. They will also
be on probation for their remaining time at West Point.
The other accused cadets will face administrative hearings,
which could potentially lead to expulsion.
In 1976, 153 cadets were involved in an electrical engineering
exam cheating scandal. They resigned or were expelled, but 90
were later reinstated and allowed to graduate, according to
Ophardt.
