With WSJ headline "How an Assassin Escaped One of the Most Surveilled
Cities in the World" regarding the escape of a guy who shot and killed
the CEO of United Health Insurance, I looked up on the Most Surveilled
Cites in the World.
USnews had one such report:
https://www.usnews.com/news/cities/articles/2020-08-14/the-top-10-most-surveilled-cities-in-the-world
"Big Brother could very well be watching you. Globally there are 770
million closed-circuit television surveillance cameras in use, according
to a recent analysis of the world's most surveilled cities by
Comparitech, a website that provides consumers with information about >technology.
China is home to nine out of the top 10 most surveilled cities and over
half (54%) of the cameras in use globally. Taiyuan, the largest city in >China's Shanxi province, takes the top spot with 465,255 cameras
covering nearly 3.9 million people – equal to one camera for every eight >residents.
Beijing, China's capital city of around 20 million people, has the most >cameras overall, with a total of 1.15 million installed, though less
cameras per capita than Taiyuan."
Not surprised, the report is misleading. City certainly has people. And >different cities different population sizes. But cities also come in >different sizes. Larger cities naturally need more cameras than small
cites for comparable level of surveillance. US News one-dimensional
reporting would reinforce the American bias but UNPROFESSIONAL.
Taiyuan city area: 6989 sq. km.
Beijing city area: 16140 sq. km.
London city area: 1579 sq. km.
