**There is that. It would seem that the best chance that a Russian soldier has to avoid being killed is to ensure that his general is up front:

Can outsiders really tell whether generals were killed while they were actively involved a fire fight upfront or they were killed theyhttps://www.smh.com.au/world/europe/russian-generals-are-getting-killed-at-an-extraordinary-rate-20220327-p5a8bm.html

"WASHINGTON — The United States has provided intelligence about Russian units that has allowed Ukrainians to target
and kill many of the Russian generals who have died in action in the Ukraine war, according to senior American officials.
Ukrainian officials said they have killed approximately 12 generals on the front lines, a number that has astonished military
analysts.
The United States has focused on providing the location and other details about the Russian military’s mobile headquarters,
which relocate frequently."

Why did the Pentagon disclose this information?
It certainly send a signal to the Russian side that the US could have
their generals killed, at least indirectly, if it wants to.
But to what end? To make Russian generals less enthusiastic about
fighting in Ukraine? Or to provoke them into stronger actions?

Similarly, providing information to facilitate the killing of Russian generals,
would be considered belligerent from Russian point of view. No plausible denial.

US eliminates "less competent" russian generals to provide opportunities to raise for more competent ;-) [See Napoleon Bonaparte.]
