Officers announced the arrest of a man who was caught on camera stealing packages from Lakewood residences during the holiday season.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Lakewood Station posted a
video on Instagram with footage from the arrest that included a brief interaction between an officer and the suspect.
In the video, filmed by the interrogating officer, the suspect is
handcuffed in the back of a law enforcement vehicle as the officer asks if
he knows what he stole.
“I got two packages,” the suspect replied. “It was a nice neighborhood.”
LASD said it was thanks to a resident who witnessed the theft and called
it in that deputies were able to quickly find the man and recover the
stolen items from inside his car.
The suspect, whose face is blurred in the social media video, has not yet
been publicly identified by authorities.
Upon further searching the man’s car and his person, the department said
that deputies also found items that were stolen from a nearby TJ Maxx as
well as suspected methamphetamine.
“The suspect had two prior theft-related convictions and two prior
possession of a controlled substance-related convictions,” added the
Lakewood Station.
Details of the man’s thefts committed in Lakewood are limited. One video
also included in the post shows the man sprinting over to a package,
grabbing it, and sprinting off with it – but officials did not immediately
say where or when that took place.
Authorities said the man was ultimately arrested for felony petty theft,
felony possession of a controlled substance with two prior convictions and receiving stolen property.
“Great work! Remember to keep an eye out,” concluded the station’s
Instagram post. “Report any crime in progress or any suspicious activity
in your neighborhood!”
