A 52-year-old felon who raped and sex trafficked more than 20 women in Oakland County will be locked up for what’s likely to be the rest of his life, a judge has ordered.
On Nov. 28, Oakland County Circuit Judge Cheryl Matthews handed Richard Lee Coleman, Jr. a prison sentence of 75 to 120 years for the 11 criminal charges he was convicted of following a jury trial this past September.

According to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, Coleman was arrested a year prior and charged with the crimes after a police sting identified two victims who reported being trafficked by Coleman. Several victims testified during his trial.
Court records show Coleman was convicted of multiple counts of human trafficking, criminal sexual conduct, prostitution and maintaining a drug house.
The Michigan Department of Corrections shows Coleman spent a few years in prison in Michigan for multiple drug crimes in Oakland County — one with a maximum sentence of up to 40 years, and several others with 20-year maximums. He was discharged from
prison in early 2020.
Coleman has another case pending in Oakland County Circuit Court for weapons-related offenses.
Regarding Coleman’s most recent conviction, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald stated: “My office is focused on violent crime and human trafficking, which is why I formed the first-ever Trafficking Unit within the Prosecutor’s Office.The
conviction and sentencing of this defendant make our community safer. That was only possible because of the bravery of the victims and the tremendous effort of Trafficking Unit Section Leader Cindy Brown, and the law enforcement investigators who worked
