BURIEN, Wash. — An 18-year-old man was charged with the murder of legally blind, safe streets advocate Roy Steven Bird.

The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Naim Sa’Vaughn Hicks was charged with second-degree murder Monday afternoon.

Hicks was arrested on Jan. 9 for the murder of 63-year-old Bird that happened in Burien last month.

According to court documents, Hicks was a passenger in an SUV that nearly hit Bird while driving through an intersection. Bird was with a group of two friends, one of which yelled out of frustration and threw his car keys at the SUV as it passed,
    prompting it to stop.

Hicks jumped out of the SUV as it stopped and began to yell at Bird and his group. Court documents say Hicks “first punched Kenneth in the head and then punched Roy in the side of his head.”

“Roy has severely limited vision, so he did not see the punch coming and was unable to defend himself,” court documents stated.

Bird hit his head on the pavement after being knocked to the ground. Hicks fled the scene with the driver of the SUV.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Bird was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he died three days later, according to court documents.

Hicks is being held on a $1 million bail.
