ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis community took matters into its own hands on
Saturday morning, working together to clear the icy street that has been a hazard since a snowstorm struck two weeks ago. The storm left roads across
the city covered in a thick layer of snow and ice, leaving many residents struggling to navigate their own neighborhoods.

Around 9 a.m. on Saturday, surveillance footage from a Bevo Mill resident captured the moment a trash truck nearly collided with a parked car after getting stuck on a massive block of ice. The incident was a stark reminder
of the ongoing dangers posed by the untreated streets.

Instead of waiting for city officials another day, a handful of neighbors decided to take action.

By 11 a.m. a group of fed-up residents took to the streets with shovels
ready to break up the ice.

One resident said "we came together to protect our own cars since we can’t
get any help from the city."

James McQueen, a homeowner that has lived in the neighborhood since 2014,
said he went out to clear some of the ice because he noticed drivers were struggling with the divots in the ice.

"One tire would go down and the back tire would swing out," he said.

Before he knew it, there were about 12 neighbors at any given time that
joined him to break up the ice.

"Its a really really fun outpouring of support for our street as far as
people seeing the need and coming out and helping," McQueen said. "The
idea that there was people coming out to help that don't normally come out
to help it kind or restores your faith in humanity a bit."

By 2 p.m. the neighborhood saw progress, transforming an icy road into a passable one again.

Over the past two weeks, McQueen's four-wheel drive has helped him get off
his street but he said others were not so fortunate. Once he realized that
help was not coming, he shifted gears and helped clear much of the road.
