President Trump and Republicans this week slammed a plea for “mercy” issued by
Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde during a Tuesday morning prayer service, calling it unjustified and inappropriate. But she is unfazed by their denunciations.

With Trump seated in the first pew of Washington National Cathedral, alongside first lady Melania Trump, Vice President Vance and second lady Usha Vance, Budde
asked the new administration to “have mercy upon the people in our country who
    are scared now.”

The Episcopal leader for the Washington area said most immigrants, even those without proper documentation, were good neighbors, and the vast majority are “not criminals.” She added that “there are gay, lesbian and transgender children
in Democratic, Republican and independent families, some who fear for their lives.”

President Trump and Vice President Vance listened, with the latter twice slowly turning his head toward his wife, who didn’t acknowledge the gestures.

Returning to the White House, Trump told reporters Budde’s service was “not too
exciting, was it?” Later, in the early hours of Wednesday, Trump fumed at her on
    Truth Social.

“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way,” Trump wrote, adding that her service was “uninspiring,” “nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart.”

Good! Trump is finally turning on the Christians.

When will he tell us to burn the churches? Before or after he taxes them?

He engaged in conflict with Henry II, King of England, over the
rights and privileges of the Church and was murdered by followers
of the King in Canterbury Cathedral. Soon after his death, he was

CHARLOTTE — A 24-year-old registered sex offender is in custody after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman Tuesday afternoon at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse, police said.

According to court records, the woman was a social worker and the suspect, Devonte Johnson, was her client. The sheriff’s office said Johnson knocked on the door of the Area of Mental Health office on the eighth floor of the courthouse at about 12:15 p.
    m.

Court records said the woman last met with Johnson in April 2022, but he showed up without a scheduled appointment Tuesday. The woman took Johnson to the waiting room but a shortly after, he went into her office with no pants on, according to records.

That was when Johnson hit the victim in the head and tried to rape and sexually assault her, according to court records. He then threatened her with scissors from her desk if she did not stop screaming, and then took her cell phone, cut the phone line
and disconnected her computer, the records said.

Before leaving the room and running away from the courthouse, the court records said he also stole the victim’s credit cards from her wallet.

The woman had bruising and swelling on her face and was taken to a local hospital for her injuries.

The sheriff’s office said that after the assault, deputies secured the courthouse and started searching for Johnson.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police found him Tuesday night and arrested him. He admitted to officers that he tried to rape the victim and said it was because he was “off his medication and hearing voices,” according to court records.

Johnson was charged with attempted second-degree rape, attempted second-degree sex offense, kidnapping, sexual battery, assault on a female, common law robbery, interfering with emergency communication, communicating threats, damage to property, and
    indecent exposure.

“It is very unfortunate that this happened,” Sheriff Garry McFadden said. “I am always grateful for the professionalism and response of our deputies. Now our focus is on apprehending this suspect to prevent this from occurring again.”

    The investigation is ongoing.

Channel 9 has previously reported that deputies were moved from the courthouse detail to cover an understaffed jail. We have asked the sheriff’s office and county officials if shifting resources left parts of the courthouse less secure and what
security measures will be taken going forward to protect the hundreds of employees who work there.

County leaders said they had no comment at this time and directed us to the sheriff’s office, who has not responded at this point.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Charlotte Crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.

A convicted rapist was sentenced to 100 years in prison in connection with a nearly 32-year-old sexual assault at a Charlotte hotel.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A convicted rapist was sentenced to 100 years in prison in connection with a nearly 32-year-old sexual assault at a Charlotte hotel.

According to the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office, 60-year-old Jerry Oglesby was found guilty by a jury for a rape committed on Thanksgiving Day in 1985. Oglesby was tried for second-degree rape, second-degree sex offense, common law
robbery, and felony breaking or entering in connection with the assault. He was handed down the maximum sentence by the judge.

Prosecutors say that on Thanksgiving Day 1985, the victim went to a Charlotte hotel where she had been hired as a plumbing contractor to refurbish the hotel’s bathtubs. On her way to one of the rooms, investigators say she passed a man walking in the
other direction in the hallway. A short while later, the man walked into the room, grabbed her, and sexually assaulted her. The suspect then took $20 from her jeans before running from the room.

Detectives were unable to identify Oglesby as a suspect at the time, but cold case investigators reopened the case decades later and discovered his DNA. He was arrested in Kentucky in 2014. Police said Oglesby’s DNA was entered into the national
registry following his conviction for a rape committed in South Carolina nine months after the Charlotte attack.

Both victims testified in court against Oglesby, officials said.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A Cobb County man was arrested after he was accused of attacking a 74-year-old woman.

Twenty-six-year-old Ahmad Rucker, of Cobb County, is behind bars after police said he raped and beat a 74-year-old grandmother, in front of her 5-year-old grandchild.

Channel 2′s Audrey Washington obtained the warrant.

The woman told investigators that Rucker broke into her home and attacked her. She suffered a broken shoulder, nose and bruising to most of her body.

Police arrested Rucker and charged him with rape, burglary, battery, child cruelty and other offenses.

On Monday, Washington went to the Cobb County address listed for Rucker. She spoke with a woman at the home and asked about the charges.

“We’re just as surprised as anybody else right now,” said the woman.

“Without knowing anything about this young man or anything that led up to it, it seems like he chose a target that was less able to defend themselves, may have been an easier target as far as power and control,” said Dr. Rebecca Johnson Osei, a
    clinical psychologist.

Johnson-Osei has never treated Rucker, but she has studied the minds and behaviors of rapists.

“Why do people rape at all? A lot of people think it’s about sex, but it’s not. It’s about power and control,” Johnson-Osei explained to Washington.

Johnson-Osei said in this case the age difference between the suspect and the alleged victim, is particularly disturbing.

“Makes me wonder what’s going on with him from a mental health standpoint,” said Osei.

“And to know that a five-year-old was there, she was present that makes me question his mindset,” she added.

CHARLOTTE, NC (Mark Price/The Charlotte Observer) - The man accused of attacking a woman last year on McAlpine Greenway in southeast Charlotte is going to prison for up to 46 years, according to the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office.

Tenedrick Strudwick, 21, pleaded guilty to first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was sentenced to between 30 and 46 years in prison. Upon release, he must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life,
    officials said.

Strudwick was arrested in March 2016, after a woman reported being sexually assaulted while walking her dog on the greenway.

The victim told police the ordeal began about 5:15 p.m., when a man stopped to talk with her. The man then took a sock from his pocket and hit her several times in her head with an object that was in the sock. The man dragged her into the woods in the
7400 block of Terrace Drive, sexually assaulted her and left, police said.

The woman sought help back on the trail, and someone called 911.

Responding officers broadcast a description of the suspect. With help from a police helicopter, officers found a man matching the assailant's description in the 10600 block of East W.T. Harris Boulevard.

Police said they found the woman's cellphone on the man, whom they identified as Strudwick.

An Old Lycoming Township man was locked on no bail after he raped a female acquaintance and cut her throat with a serrated knife during a domestic disturbance late Monday afternoon in an apartment in the 900 block of Memorial Ave., city police alleged in
    an affidavit.

Unique T. Robinson, 23, of 2030 Mill Lane, faces felony charges of attempted homicide, rape, aggravated assault, sexual assault and strangulation as well as misdemeanor charges of simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime and recklessly
    endangering another person, police said.

Moments after being raped and her throat slashed, the victim “yelled for help” inside the apartment. As she “tried to get to a window, Robinson smashed her head through the window, shattering the glass,” the affidavit stated.

Police alleged Robinson “put the victim in a chokehold in an effort to strangle her. As she cried, the victim begged Robinson not to kill her to which he replied ‘I have to because you’re going to tell my baby mom,'” court documents stated.

Bleeding from her neck, the woman managed to get around Robinson to the front door and force her way outdoors, where she was able to get help from two people sitting on a neighbor’s porch, police said.

Officers rushed to the scene to investigate a domestic disturbance with “a stab wound” about 4:30 p.m.

The woman, who was taken by ambulance to UPMC Williamsport, told police that she went to the Memorial Avenue apartment “to chill” with Robinson. Court records identified the two as “partners.” While the two were sitting on a futon, Robinson
attempted to disrobe the woman “and manipulate her body in an attempt to have sex with her.

She told him numerous times she did not want to have sex,” but he persisted and assaulted her sexually, police alleged. He then “reached around from behind and sliced her throat with a knife,” police alleged.

Taken into custody at the scene without incident, Robinson was arraigned before District Judge Gary Whiteman and automatically placed in the Lycoming County Prison after denying him bail.
