Armaster McEady
VALDOSTA — In 12 minutes, a jury found Armaster McEady guilty of rape, burglary and aggravated battery in the April 2015 case of a sexual assault on a 74-year-old woman.
Her face and body were severely beaten and she had clear signs of rape April 26, 2015, when she was admitted to South Georgia Medical Center, according to court testimony. Her right eye was swollen shut and two of her right ribs were fractured, a witness
testified Tuesday in Lowndes County Superior Court.
The woman did not immediately identify McEady as the man who assaulted and raped her. During an investigation, police found bodily fluids on the victim's underwear later connected to McEady.
A Georgia Bureau of Investigation forensic scientist did DNA testing showing the fluid belonged to McEady. The only other DNA on the underwear belonged to the woman, a GBI witness said.
McEady and the woman's daughter dated but broke up a month before the incident, according to court testimony. He entered in a plea of not guilty and was defended by attorney Jason Moon.
Moon said during the trial there was no evidence McEady entered the home. There was no sign of a break-in. Police failed to find any of his fingerprints or boot prints in or around the woman's home, where McEady lived while dating the daughter.
Assistant Southern Circuit Attorney Traci Chapman said the woman's door could not lock and McEady would know that. Also, several electronic items hidden in the woman's home were stolen. Chapman argued McEady would have been the only person who would have
known where the electronics were hidden.
Chapman said the most important evidence against McEady was his DNA being on the victim's underwear. She argued that any other explanation for how his fluid got there was ridiculous.
Southern Circuit Judge Jim Tunison set the sentencing date for 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, in the Lowndes County Jail.
