MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The man who has been kidnapping and raping children in South Memphis has been identified, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).

MPD said Laderio Gordon, 29, is the man responsible for the string of crimes which left communities in South Memphis on edge for weeks.

Laderio Gordon, 29, was charged with rape of a child and especially aggravated kidnapping, among other charges.

Gordon was arrested on April 27, court records show.

An arrest affidavit accuses Cordon of kidnapping and raping a 12-year-old girl two weeks prior, on April 13, 2023.

That 12-year-old girl was walking to school in the area of Ethlyn Avenue and Silver Street when Gordon pulled out a gun and ordered her into his 2018 Ford Escape, investigators said.

Gordon then drove away with the girl and told her to turn her phone off and forced her to perform a sexual act on him, his arrest affidavit states.

Police said that Gordon then offered the girl money, which she declined.

About 15 minutes later, Gordon dropped the young girl back off at the same location where he abducted her.

Multiple neighborhood cameras caught Gordon stalking Silver Street and recorded the 29-year-old letting the girl out of his vehicle after the sexual assault, police said.

Memphis Police said that Gordon admitted to the crimes and the details police outlined in the affidavit.

For this arrest, Gordon is charged with especially aggravated kidnapping, rape of a child and employment of a firearm with intent to commit a felony.

One person FOX13 spoke with who lives near Hamilton K-8 school, the area where the 12-year-old was kidnapped, said that they are relieved to know Gordon is off the streets, but questioned the time it took police to alert the community.

“It feels better in the neighborhood now that we know he's caught," the anonymous neighbor told FOX13. "Really everybody was in an uproar because we didn't know nothing about it until they caught him. Well day before they caught him, anyway. Police,
they should have been more active, and let us know so we could have been more prepared instead of us letting these kids walk to school. These kids was walking to school and walking home not knowing that it's a man riding around here kidnapping people.”

Memphis Police said additional charges will be coming against Gordon related to the kidnappings and sexual assaults.

What took so long? That was what residents in South Memphis were asking after they learned about a man who police said was abducting young females and sexually assaulting them.

Two girls abused by Gordon positively identified him, Memphis Police said.

Memphis Police said that cases involving Gordon have already been reported in the Gaslight, Bunker Hill and Cane Creek areas of South Memphis.

But, police are continuing to track down leads of other cases which he may be connected to.

Memphis Police asked that if you have seen anything suspicious or have been approached by Gordon, especially in but not limited to the areas mentioned above, that you call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-2274 (CASH).
