    Cedric Lydon Padgett

Shoplifting toiletries led to the Thursday arrest of an Athens man
wanted for an alleged rape, according to Athens-Clarke County
    police.

Cedric Lydon Padgett, 42, was taken into custody after he led
police on a car chase from the Dollar Tree on Atlanta Highway,
where he allegedly shoplifted a bagful of toiletry items.

Officers responded to the Dollar Tree at about 5 p.m. on a report
of a shoplifting in progress, and as they arrived, the suspect was
pulling out of the parking lot, according to a police report.

An officer attempted to stop the car on Timothy Road, but the
driver ignored the patrol car's emergency lights and siren. After
turning onto Epps Bridge Parkway, Padgett's car reach speeds of up
to 70 mph, then abruptly slowed prior to turning onto Old Epps
Bridge Road, according to the report.

He pulled the car into a nursing home's parking lot, where the
report notes Padgett gave the impression he was going to run from
the still-moving vehicle by slightly opening the driver's-side
door. As Padgett exited the vehicle, the officer drew his gun and
    ordered Padgett to the ground.

In the car was a bag containing 64 toiletry items that totaled $64
in value, according to the report.

The arresting officer noted that Padgett admitted he fled because
    of outstanding felony warrants.

The warrants charged him with rape, battery and aggravated assault
for an alleged assault of a woman last month in north Athens.

In addition to being served with the warrants, Padgett was charged
with shoplifting, fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer
and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. He is being held
without bond at the Clarke County Jail.
