NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — It’s every woman’s worst nightmare—attacked in the dark by a stranger.
It’s exactly what a woman says happened to her in North Charleston on August 13.
After a month-long search, police said Maurice Jermone Prioleau, 42, turned himself in Tuesday night on charges of criminal sexual misconduct, kidnapping and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

The victim attended his bond hearing Wednesday and begged the judge to deny bond, clearly still traumatized and frightened.
“I have to live with this and I will never feel clean again,” she said. “He needs to be in prison for the rest of his life so he can’t hurt anyone else ever again.”
On the night of August 13, police said Prioleau forced his way into the victim’s car, which was parked outside a business on Harley street.
She was there to salvage discarded wooden pallets. Police said he sexually assaulted her inside the car and then forced her outside behind a business, where he forced her to strip, then raped her, bashed her head repeatedly against a concrete block, and
stole her vehicle, police say.
The woman said he held her at knife-point the entire time.
“He came out from behind a building like a monster in the dark,” she said.
At one point when they were in the car, she said she tried to distract him and managed to pop the trunk open with her foot.
When he stepped out to close it, she dialed a friend’s number from her cellphone.
“I knew he was going to kill me and I wanted there to be evidence of that,” she said. “That was the last person, that was the last call that I had made and he had to hear what happened in the car and I’m so sorry for that.”
Police said Prioleau left the scene in the victim’s car and later found it abandoned on Montague Avenue.
Through witness testimony, a line-up and DNA evidence, they were able to positively identify Prioleau and charge him in connection to the case.
Prioleau has an extensive criminal record dating back to 1993.
He was charged with criminal sexual misconduct on three other occasions, but was not convicted.
