Aug 15 (Reuters) - Prominent California attorney Lisa Bloom and her law
firm will pay more than $274,000 to resolve claims that they gave the U.S. government false information in connection with a COVID-19 pandemic relief program, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

The Bloom Firm will pay approximately $204,000 while Bloom and her husband Braden Pollock will each pay more than $35,000 to settle allegations under
the False Claims Act, prosecutors said.

Bloom, Pollock and the law firm denied the allegations, and are not
admitting any liability by settling the claims, according to the firm and documents prosecutors provided.

The Bloom Firm said in a statement that it "voluntarily agreed" to return
the relief funds. "We strongly disagree with this interpretation of the
law and know that we did nothing wrong," the firm said.

Bloom is known for taking on high-profile cases, including representing
women who accused now-deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein and comedian Bill Cosby of sexual assault. Her past clients have also included disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

Prosecutors alleged that the Bloom Firm falsely certified it used funds
from the U.S. Small Business Administration's Paycheck Protection Program during the pandemic for eligible payroll expenses, when it actually used
the money to pay several workers who were ineligible to receive the PPP
funds or were not working for the firm.

"Attorneys have a duty to follow the law to the letter – especially when
it comes to government programs aiding individuals and businesses impacted
by COVID-19," Martin Estrada, the U.S. Attorney for the Central District
of California, said in a statement Thursday.

U.S. law firms in 2020 borrowed nearly $12 billion from PPP as their
revenues were threatened by court closures and a freeze in corporate
    deals.

We will never know the full scale of
the covid loan abuses because Trump kept
    so much of it secret.

Mnuchin is Keeping $500 Billion in Bailout Funds Secret
    June 11 2020

Note: U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin
told Congress Wednesday that the Trump
administration intends to keep secret the
names of the businesses that have received
more than $500 billion in COVID-19 bailout
funds through the Paycheck Protection Program
(PPP), claiming the information is "confidential."

Making sure trillions in tax dollars go to workers,
not profiteers, begins with knowing where it goes.
What are they hiding? Are massive corporations
masquerading as small businesses receiving funds?
Are President Donald Trump and Mnuchin's pals
getting money when they shouldn't be? These are
questions that need to be answered, and the only
way to do that is through complete transparency.
