Yes, there is. Article II Section I. It's the same executive
power that empowered Roosevelt in June 1907 to require women to
declare their marital status on their passport applications. And
yet the word "passport" doesn't appear more often in the
constitution than does the word "language".

I think you may be pleasantly surprised by how quickly the rest
of the world will be ready to trust the USA again when it returns
to normal after its flirtation with despotism (although we may
never again be able to keep a straight face when you boast of
your Constitution's 'checks and balances'). The US has its share
of enemies, but it also has... or rather, /had/ many friends, and
most of those friends are ready to restore their friendship just
as soon as the States goes back on its meds.

    The deals have already started.

Bullshit. Of course, Trump has said there *will be no 'deals'*. He has said he will "never" change his tariffs.

No nation, not even China, wants tariffs but the key is to convince them
to even the playing field somewhat so it is fair.

The "playing field" already was level. Most countries only levied very low tariffs on U.S. goods. Switzerland levied *zero* tariffs on American goods. The reason the U.S. has a trade "deficit" with Switzerland is because the Swiss don't want to buy shitty American manufactured goods, but Swiss manufactured goods are of superb quality and Americans want to buy them.

Of course there is so much to it such as countries devaluing their currency,

*No* countries have devalued their currencies to boost exports.

    slave labor wages,

No such thing. Slaves earn *zero* wages. Employees in countries that export to the U.S. are paid wages.

do the raw materials need to be imported to make the product etc but tariffs or
the threat of tariffs is a start toward negotiations.
Trump said he will *never* negotiate. He says the tariffs are *permanent*.

Still, you're getting to the core of why Trump has such a fanatical
obsession with tariffs, and why so many people were willing to vote for
    an obvious crackpot.

Free trade has been very good for the US economy. The country as a whole
has prospered in a high-trade environment. Unfortunately the benefits
have not trickled down to half or more of the population. The
combination of a free-market approach and advancing technology has meant
good jobs for the talented and well-educated, but low-paid jobs have
been exported. Trump wants to get Americans back into those low-paid jobs.

His attitude to kicking out foreigners follows the same theme. Parts of
the country are filled with foreigners doing the work that Americans
aren't willing to do. Trump is promising to put Americans back into the
    shitty jobs.

These arguments work with the sort of people who vote for him, but his
new tariffs are getting some opposition from the captains of industry.
Suppose you propose to spend a billion or so dollars on building a big
new manufacturing plant. Building it will take a couple of years, maybe
even an entire presidential term. Who knows what the rules will be two
years from now? With Trump, you don't even know what the rules will be
next week. So that sort of big project is too risky.

Monkeys in a bicycle factory make bicycles, so they deserve a
share of the bicycles --- the pedals, perhaps.

Wait... hard to sell a bike without pedals, so perhaps it would
be better to compensate them for their time and skill by, say,
    paying them a wage.

Wages are paid in return for time and talent.

Profits are paid (or /may/ be paid) in return for risk, and the
other side of the coin is the losses incurred when it all goes
wrong. Are your monkeys prepared to stump up to pay the firm's
creditors if the shop has to fold?

If so, the mechanism for doing that is to buy shares in the company.

Good way to start a war. So Slobbovia bought grain from you at an
agreed upon price for the next three years of three Slobbos a bushel.
Then Slobbovia devalues it's currency by fifty percent.

But you'll be a bit daft to accept a contract from Slobbovia paid in
their currency, wouldn't you? The payment would be in your currency -
doesn't then matter is they devalue.

Suddenly, you're having to accept half price on your grain deal.

Yeah, this kind of stuff used to trigger wars. The US with it's
standard global currency and free trade direction does more to keep
the peace than all the guns we've EVER had.

Trump just threw that away and worse, badly damaged the trust our

I don't trust anything that scientologists say, but I did once read an
article that claimed that about 5% of the population are sociopaths. But
the article also said that society can live with this, because "where
else would you get managers?". That was, I think, using a rather broad definition of sociopathy. There's a smaller group in a more serious
category, and it's clear that Trump is one of those "more serious" cases.

Trump would be harmless, except to the people close to him, if he were a private citizen. It's having so much power that makes him one of the

so much of a backlash at the midterm elections that Congress will

It's well known that narcissists rewrite history, distorting the truth
as part of their self-justification. Something that is less documented,
and that I came to realise only after a long association with such a

That is, they even lie to themselves. That's why they don't seem to
understand other people's reactions to obvious untruths. To them, those
