It can be tempting to dash into a public toilet when you're out and
about and desperate to wee.
But next time you run into your local cafe to use the toilet always
check the loo roll.
A person took to TikTok to reveal that the tiny marks often seen on
public toilet paper are made by drug users who are cleaning their dirty needles.
One person commented: 'This happened to me literally almost had a panic attack.'
Another user said: 'Not me I flip the seat up and never use paper in a
public restroom. Thank you for this tho. I'll spread the word on this.'
If the roll has indents or rust-coloured marks then it's safer to avoid
using the tissue altogether.
The small marks could be specks of blood from dirty needles used for
injecting illegal drugs.
And there's a chance the blood could be infected with a viral disease.
In September, Dr Sermed Mezher, a GP who boasts over 200,000 TikTok
followers, claimed transmitting a virus through toilet paper was a 'very
rare' but 'possible' risk.
Experts have long warned that drug users may resort to makeshift
cleaning methods for their needles, such as wiping them with toilet paper.
But wiping a needle does not kill pre-existing viruses.
Instead, they may remain on the needle or indirectly expose them to the
public by transferring to surfaces like toilet seats.
