Justice Clarence Thomas, who dissented along with Justice
Samuel Alito, contended, “The Government asked this Court
just last Term to ‘rewrite’ statutory text so that it could
regulate semi-automatic weapons as machineguns. We declined
to do so. The Government now asks us to rewrite statutory
text so that it can regulate weapon-parts kits. This time,
the Court obliges. I would not. The statutory terms ‘frame’
and ‘receiver’ do not cover the unfinished frames and
receivers contained in weapon-parts kits, and weapon-parts
kits themselves do not meet the statutory definition of
‘firearm.’ That should end the case. The majority instead
blesses the Government’s overreach based on a series of
errors both regarding the standard of review and the
interpretation of the statute. I respectfully dissent.”

IMHO, it's not really the feds business to know who
owns what firearms or parts thereof. Its role is
more 'reactive' here, if a legally prohibited
individual is intercepted in-possession. The prob
isn't the gun, but the perp.
My HOPE is that Trump, while he's still got the
influence, pushes some laws through that more
deeply empower the 2nd - laws that will be hard
to UN-do later, not just 'opinions' to the DOJ
or whatever.
Given the long situation/psychology of the USA, a
"just not worth it" citizen counterbalance to State
physical threat MUST be maintained. That balance is
just the way it has to be and we've seen why over
the years. We are not Euros, not used to bowing and
supplicating to kings and queens and fancy-dressed
Lord Field-Marshals. As they say, Power To The PEOPLE
is the theme. USA works better that way.
EZ new law ... NO serial numbers on firearms sold
in the USA. Next, shred all records/backups of
individually-indentifiable purchase info. Yea
yea, that'd kinda let Hunter off the hook, but
certain sacrifices are required :-)
