An 'Ivy League' degree is mostly just toilet paper
these days. Now some of the 2nd-tier schools still
seem mostly OK. but US ed is still NOT what it used
to be. You're not buying an education anymore, but
a piece of paper. People demand that piece of paper
even if they never showed up at a single class.

"Ivy League" sci/tech still seems relatively good, but

Talk about discussion timing... There was a "student loan activist" on
George Noory recently talking about this very thing, Alan Collinge I
think. I believe this is the episode.

Noory gets some nuts on there every now and then, but this was an
intelligent episode and pointed out how the student loans of today are virtually unrepayable for various reasons, specifically predatory lending practices.

There was discussion of how poorly liberal arts degrees prepared anyone
for employment post grad. Depends on the degree, but there are some
really stupid ones out there these days. The gist was that in many cases
they couldn't make enough to pay the loan back in a reasonable amount of
time and refinancing only made it worse. COVID was a disaster all around because it increased payments for some.

Anyhow, the guest was making the point that on the low side there is $1.2 trillion in student loan debt that would likely have to be forgiven
because the debtors couldn't make enough to pay it back and afford basic
    living expenses.

It was interesting and had good points.

It has all been a huge SCAM for decades now.

Make it easy to GET the loans - students run
up HUGE debts and Colleges get to massively
    over-charge (while under-performing).

After ? Who gives a shit - just KEEP CHARGING
    for those loans, compounding .....

IMHO, the "solution" isn't "forgiveness" per-se,
but a "settlement". LOTS and LOTS of those ex
students with worthless degrees have paid back
the money two or three times over now. CALL IT
    EVEN and That's That.
