A man is charged with committing a rape at knifepoint in Smyrna.
The incident occurred May 31st at a local apartment, according to Smyrna Police. Police said an investigation indicates that 34-year-old James Wheeler took out a knife and proceeded to rape and sexually assault a member of his family.
Other relatives arrived, and the suspect fled. According to Smyrna Police, Wheeler was arrested in Dover four days after the incident. He is charged with rape and other crimes, and is now behind bars at the Sussex Correctional Institution on $174,000
cash bond pending a future court hearing.
Smyrna Police listed these charges against Wheeler:
- Rape 1st degree
- Possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony
- Aggravated menacing
- Possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited
