SYRACUSE, N.Y. — An 18-year-old man faces charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a 37-year-old woman under the Bear Street Bridge, Syracuse Police say.

Police say the woman was running on the Creekwalk around 1:04 p.m. on Saturday when she was attacked from behind by the man, later identified as Edward Scholtz. Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick says the attack appears "totally random.
    "

Scholtz assaulted the woman and attempted to rape her, police say.

Police say an elderly couple walking the Creekwalk saw the attack taking place and took immediate action. One of them, a 71-year-old man, attempted to intervene to help the woman.

Scholtz attacked the elderly man, punching him in the face and injuring him. After he attacked the elderly man, police say he want back to attacking the woman. The elderly man then grabbed a stick in an attempt to stop the attack. When Scholtz saw the
man approaching with the stick, he ran off, police say.

Officer David Ciciriello saw Scholtz on Hiawatha Blvd. near the mall. He attempted to stop him, but Scholtz refused and fled.

Police say Scholtz made his way onto the Destiny USA pedestrian bridge, knocking over two small children has he ran.

Eventually, Officer Ciciriello caught up to Scholtz and took him into custody with other officers' assistance. Scholtz faces charges of:

Attempted Rape in the First Degree
Sexual Abuse in the First Degree
    Criminal Obstruction of Breathing
    Assault in the Third Degree
two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child
Sholtz was lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center. Both victims were treated for their injuries at the scene.

Due to the violent nature of this crime, the photo is being released as a matter of public safety.
