EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — Two women were sentenced to years in federal
prison after admitting to being involved in a mail-theft scheme that
included more than $100,000 in bank fraud.

According to a press release from U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft's
office, 30-year-old Tylann Starks of Swansea was sentenced to four years
in prison and 33-year-old Tiara Johnson of Pontoon Beach was sentenced
to 27 months in prison after they both pleaded guilty to their
involvement with the scheme that ran from 2020 to 2023.

According to charging documents, Starks bought an arrow key from a
former postal employee for $1,000. Starks and Johnson then used the key
to search collection boxes for checks, and used the personal information
to cash the checks or generate fraudulent checks.

Starks and Johnson cashed, deposited or used the stolen and counterfeit
checks at area businesses, banks and ATMs in Belleville, East St. Louis
    and O’Fallon.

The press release said there were at least 100 victims affected by the
scheme with an estimated loss of more than $100,000.

Starks pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud,
three counts of bank fraud, two counts of aggravated identity theft and
one count of conspiracy to steal U.S. mail. Johnson pleaded guilty to
one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, one count of bank fraud
and one count of conspiracy to steal U.S. mail.

The former postal employee who allegedly sold them the arrow key,
52-year-old Jamil Jackson, is also facing charges. He is facing one
count of conspiracy to steal U.S. mail, one count of theft of a
specialized key to access US Postal receptacles and one count of making
false statements to a federal law enforcement officer. He is set to
appear in court on May 13.
