FAYETTE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRC) - The remains of a 1-year-old were allegedly
found in his family's "burn pile" eight months after he went missing and
five months after his father and sibling were killed in a car crash.
According to a press release from the Fayette County Sheriff's Office, the death of a 1-year-old child who went missing almost a year ago was finally solved on Thursday.
The child was reported missing on Dec. 8 after a car crash killed his 2- year-old sister and critically injured his father, who passed away the
next day. After weeks of investigating, Andrew Hamlin, the District
Attorney of the 24th Judicial Circuit of Alabama, released a statement
that revealed authorities believed that the child had actually been
missing for months prior to the report being filed and was likely already deceased.
Furthermore, authorities arrested 22-year-old Wendy Pamela Bailey, the
mother of the child, and charged her with aggravated child abuse, first-
degree domestic violence, abuse of a corpse, and criminally negligent
homicide. Bailey was a passenger in the vehicle that crashed, and received
the negligent homicide charge due to her daughter not being correctly
fastened into her seat at the time of the crash.
Police learned that another child was missing after the car crash,
prompting the months-long investigation. In the press release from
Thursday, the sheriff's office said, "After multiple searches at the
property, officers recovered what was believed to be remains of [the 1- year-old] located in a burn pile at the family residence."
Additionally, the child's grandfather, John Bailey, was arrested and
charged with failure to report a missing child as well as the same charges Wendy received.
