O'FALLON, Ill. — Prosecutors on Tuesday charged an 18-year-old man with
the murder of a teenage girl over the weekend in O'Fallon, Illinois.

Julian G. Holloway was charged with one count of murder, according to St.
    Clair County court records.

St. Clair County coroner Calvin Dye Sr. identified the victim as Cadence
    E. Prince, 17, of O'Fallon. Prince was a junior at O'Fallon Township High School.

Prince's parents said their daughter "loved wearing makeup, loved animals
and was excited about recently getting her driver’s license and first
car." She also leaves behind an 11-year-old sister.

O'Fallon police said Holloway stabbed the girl Sunday night while the pair
was on the Goshen Trailhead parking lot off Kyle Road.

Holloway was taken into custody at the scene, police said.

Prince's mother, Victoria Dimmitt, said Holloway was "like family."

“He celebrated birthdays with us and was recently here at our home
celebrating Mother’s Day with me," she said. "No one saw this coming. We
    are all in shock.”

Holloway was being held at the St. Clair County Jail.

In a Facebook post, O'Fallon Township High School District 203 said "it is
with a heavy heart that we share the sudden and unexpected passing of ... junior Cadence Eileen Prince."

The district said social workers and school counselors would be available
for students affected by her death.

"Let’s continue to lean on one another and keep Eileen's spirit alive in
the kindness we show every day," the district said.

O'Fallon police asked anyone who was in the area of the Goshen Trailhead parking lot between the hours of 8-9:30 p.m. to call Detective John Kostainschek at 618-624-9571.
